My oldest one is only 4. But I start to looking into summer camp for school age. Some runs about $6000 for 2 months. Maybe I am the poor one, but is it a lot of parents willing to spend that much for one summer? Any other cheaper options?
You have both - people who don't bat an eye at $6k for 6 weeks, and some who are also in upper middle class areas who don't see a reason to pay it. As for the dirt-cheap programs - you tend to get what you pay for. I've heard of cheap programs that require you to bring them home for lunch and it's mostly outdoors so if there's inclement weather, you're out of luck - it's basically just daycare where someone is simply watching over them. There are quite a few sub $2k programs for that age that would be beneficial while keeping them safe and entertained throughout the day. Camp is more about summer fun and passing the time - don't go nuts with it. Kids can have fun with almost anything and won't miss what they don't know - obviously $6k programs have a lot more to do and a lot more available to them.

Well over thirty years ago, my son attended Usdan in Dix Hills. It was kind of a progressive camp with special programs for drama, art & music. He enjoyed it at the time, but actually did not want to go back the next year so who knows ? It still does have a solid reputation , though .

For many years, USDAN only accepted children age 8 and older. They now accept younger children, but not as young as age 4. Do you remember how your son would have to "escort" himself around the huge camp grounds? They didn't have groups with camp counselors like traditional camp, but now they have some more supervisin for the youngest ones. Also, this is not a camp for children who like to play sports.
Camps R Us has multiple campuses on LI. Mostly at schools. My 5 year old went to the West Islip (Our lady of Lourdes) campus and loved it. Was fairly reasonable too.
