Hi, we're looking to buy a house in GC southeast area and are wondering on the safety as well as value of our investment for streets that are closest to the south, say Garden and Willow St. We've seen a beautiful tudor on Willow, but its proximity to Hempstead is a bit concerning, even though the street looks very residential and well kept. Any feedback is greatly appreciated it!
Houses tend to move slower there than other parts of town due to very close proximity to Hempstead. Willow isn't as bad Meadow, but close. I remember when we sold our house there was a house for sale on Willow and it must have been on the market for 18 months.
Whatever reservations you have, a future buyer will have. For more in depth info visit the GCPD and ask them for crime stats for that area.
You need to ask a bunch of strangers on the internet if it's a good idea to move next door to a crime infested hellhole? Sounds like you need to do more research.
We have good friends who actually live on Willow St and have been to their house many times. It is a beautiful, quiet street with virtually no crime, notwithstanding the location near to Hempstead. The worst thing that has happened on Willow Street in years is that someone was stealing iPods and loose change from unlocked cars at night about a year ago, which seems to have been resolved.
Houses on Meadow Street have a reputation for moving very slowly and I would avoid buying there. Houses on Willow Street consistently sells for well above $750,000 for 3 beds on a 60x100 lot. I wouldn't worry about losing money in Garden City real estate generally. Even after 2007, the prices there never dropped much. Its a highly desirable area overall.
Yeah except for the barely-contained hordes of savages within pistol range of your family it's just gorgeous.
I can't imagine your hyperbole is giving any assistance to the original poster. I'd be surprised if you knew anything about the area other than its proximity to Hempstead. Willow Street and Garden Street are both perfectly safe. You could make the same "hordes of savages within pistol range" argument about 4th and 5th Street in GC and those are some of the most desirable streets in Nassau County.

I lived in Garden City for over twenty years, I assure you I know the area. Grove Street is a corridor for... what's the term these days? "Teens" to walk from Hempstead to Roosevelt Field, committing petty crimes and vandalism along the way. A few years ago, a corpse was dumped on the front lawn of a house on Meadow. Meadow also boasts some of the only two-family houses in the Village. The GCPD do a good job at keeping things manageable, but the proximity to crapville has a definite downside.
There's a reason why houses in that area are generally less expensive than the rest of the village (say for example in the Western section, where house sizes are comparable, but don't abut Diversityville). For the price you're paying to live in GC, it's just not worth it to take the risk. Pick another part of town, or another town all together.
Thank you all for the feedback. The street seems fairly quiet as TEPLimey noted. Interlude, thank you for your feedback as well. I just have a very hard time imagining any part of GC the way you are describing, but can appreciate your point.
Grove street and the adjacent park is as interlude describes. I think the point interlude is making is for the same money you can get in the west (although inventory is usually low) and for not much more you cann get into the estates which is far more desirable. It's not about losing money (although plenty did in the crash) it's about the question you are currently asking being asked again when YOU are ready to sell.
