My parents have a very old garage/shed on our property which is about 350/sq ft. We want to remodel it into a guest house. We heard that if you keep up one wall then it is not considered a new building and taxes will not go up much. Can we contact anyone before hand to get a figure of how much the taxes will go up or is there no solid answer until you finish the job? We don't want to go ahead and remodel then get screwed with a huge tax jump the following year. My parents have owned our main house and property for over 30 years and have never done any updates whatsoever.
Also does anyone have ideas of what type of permit we would need to get?

Thank you
You didn't state what Town you're in - that could make a difference.
Many (if not all) Towns have abolished the old "leave one wall standing" rule which enabled you to avoid higher taxes
You could just call or go to your Town and ask; possibly say "I'm looking at a house with an old shed/garage that's about 350 sqft and if I decide to buy it, I'd want to remodel it or make it into a guest house; what would be the necessary permits and the resulting taxes?"
Hope this helps a little - good luck!
P.S.: While you're there, you might want to check if there's a CO for it before you ask...
Sorry, the house is in Rocky Point. My parents are so old fashioned that they are afraid to ask an official thinking they will send someone out to sneak around and possibly reassess the property I know it sounds nuts. We were hoping there was some way to find out without alerting the town. Guess there is noway around it though...

not to take this in a different direction but........
Do you know you can make it a guest house legally?
I'm pretty sure that if I tried to convert my garage into essentally another house the town would have an issue with it unless I were on some sort of double lot or something.
Don't know much about RP and you local municipality codes and laws but I would guess that if you were to do so taxes would become a huge issue. Only saying this because currently you have no kitchen or bathroom in your shed. The simple addition of either, to a home in TNH adds a nice chunk of change to our taxes. In addition are you planning on renting it out? That is another permit here in my town. You are adding livable space so that is the key.
than youuuuuuuu
