Newsweek released its annual list Wednesday of the top public high schools in America for 2015.

Twenty-one Long Island schools–12 in Nassau and nine in Suffolk–made the list of the top 500 schools in the nation. There are almost 30,000 public high schools in the United States.
Here’s where the Long Island schools ranked:
  • No. 27- Jericho High School (Jericho)
  • No. 105- Great Neck North High School (Great Neck)
  • No. 174- Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School (Plainview)
  • No. 176- John F. Kennedy High School (Bellmore)
  • No. 196- Great Neck South High School (Great Neck)
  • No. 214- Herricks High School (New Hyde Park)
  • No. 219- Syosset High School (Syosset)
  • No. 276- Earl L. Vandermeulen High School (Port Jefferson)
  • No. 343- Sayville High School (West Sayville)
  • No. 350- Smithtown High School West (Smithtown)
  • No. 376- Elwood-John H. Glenn High School (Elwood)
  • No. 386- Half Hollow Hills High School East (Dix Hills)
  • No. 394- Wellington C. Mepham High School (Bellmore)
  • No. 408- Paul D. Schreiber Senior High School (Port Washington)
  • No. 427- Mount Sinai High School (Mount Sinai)
  • No. 436- Northport High School (Northport)
  • No. 438- Half Hollow Hills High School West (Dix Hills)
  • No. 443- Bayport-Blue Point High School (Bayport)
  • No. 444- North Shore Senior High School (Glen Head)
  • No. 447- Oceanside High School (Oceanside)
  • No. 450- Bethpage Senior High School (Bethpage)
Interesting part is Garden City, Manhasset and Rockville Centre are not on the list.

Newsweek is still a thing? In any event, their partner, Westat, is a major federal contractor who compiles data for the US Department of Education.

Anyway, good to see Elwood in the top 5 in Suffolk in this list, this is in addition to the Silver award from US News this year.

Many people think its been superseded by Niche rankings which have a better algorithm. I'm guessing LI still does very well on Niche rankings also.

A whopping 6 out of the top 10 from New Jersey? Nothing against the Garden State, but something seems a little off with their methodology.

Said no one from NJ.

Why does any of this even matter? Is this some sort salve to put on the wounds caused by excessive and suffocating taxes?

Oh my God it matters significantly! Millions of folks are going to start uprooting their families based on this data! And now Long Islanders can all exhale and go on paying the tax man!
Or maybe it's just one of many school rankings that get published EVERY year, inspire random debate, and ultimately have zero impact on anyone's life in any meaningful way.

I believe those schools refused to participate in the rankings

Cold Spring Harbor, Harborfields, Locust Valley, etc. are also missing - frequently schools do not participate for one reason or another.

According to this list, Sayville is number 9 on Long Island, who knew??!!!

(Various lists have various levels of nonsense, judge for yourself.)

Now let's rank teacher salaries of the top 1000 and see if we're actually getting the proverbial bang for the buck. My friend the 4th grade teacher in Jericho makes $155k for 10 mos with benefits to make a Congressman jealous. Thank goodness they are #27 in the land. Uh oh, there I go, attacking the profession again. D'oh!
