So I'm in the unfortunate situation where I might have to wake up at 5am to take the bus to the LIRR station to take the LIRR early enough to get to my 9am class at Stony Brook University and even then, the train gets to Stony Brook at 7:46am (The next train arrives after 9am).

Now, I'm looking to carpool with someone as a passenger and I'll contribute to gas. I only need to commute on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to make it to a 9am class and I end at 4pm. I live really close to the LIE (I'm sure that's a pretty popular route for drivers going east from my area).

I've tried looking on various carpool sites include 511NYRideshare to no success (I've sent emails to nearly a dozen drivers who have listings there with no reply).

Anyone willing to help out?

Why don't you live in a dorm?

Seriously. SBU is a top notch college for a bargain price. Live there and don't commute.

Why don't you look for a carpool AT THE SCHOOL? I mean seriously what do you think the chances are of someone hear commuting past where you live to SBU?

I would have lived there if I was offered a spot. But I transferred to SBU so they didn't guarentee housing.

I have been. So far no luck. But I'm just here to spread the net far and wide.

How do you know OP didn't do that. Never hurts to spread the word around. Even if the chances are slim.

I was a transfer student years back. I had started commuting until my car was stolen a few weeks into the semester. Trying to get to Stony Brook from my parent's home in Massapequa would have meant about 2.5 hours on the LIRR, and the same thing you are facing -- limited trains which arrive either too early or too late. I called and explained my hardship with at the student housing office. They were able to get me into a dorm room.

Make the call now.

Wow, good for you. I'll give it a shot but I doubt I'm alone. There are nearly a 500 people ahead of me on the housing waitlist. I don't know how it was back then but these days, they have quite the overcrowding problem. Now, I get that they want to overbook for the no shows but they are overbooking too much that even last year, they had loads of people on the waitlist throughout the entire year. They have so much people that SBU sends some of it's transfers to Dowling College's residential dorms for the past few years. Seems to me like they are trying to squeeze in as much students as possible.

I'll try calling them and see what they can do about it for my particular situation but I'm not the only one having problems.

If you plan on going to Stony Brook for the next 2-4 years, I suggest you move closer. 1-4 hours of commuting adds up stress and at some point, you're going to want to skip class, drop out, change college, etc.

Yes I am well aware of the overcrowding problem. There are several things contributing to it:
1) offering all freshmen on campus housing -- even if they live around the corner;
2) cutting programs which ultimately leads to more students graduating in 5 years as opposed to 4;
3) the reason you cited -- covering themselves in the event a student decides against attending.

I know a few Queens kids who made friends with other students and would crash on their floor during the week. I don't condone gaming the system, but when the system is placing the students between a rock and a hard place, something has to give.

The dorm space being leased from Dowling is in Shirley, and the lease has only been in place a little over one year. Meanwhile, there's construction of a new 700 (?) bed dorm on campus by Wang. Once complete, the powers that be on campus will still continue to accept way too many students.
