Good question. Hard to tell what the hell is going on.
It's like a sea of orange traffic cones.

I have no qualifications on what makes a bridge need replacement but the old bridge did not look bad to me, it looks like every other bridge on Sunrise. Are they going to replace all of them?

Someone had extra budget money and it had to go some ware

Just because it looks good does not mean it is. A lot of times the rust gets painted over.

Dept of transportation states it a complete replacement.

https://www.dot.ny.gov/portal/pls/po..._values=011257

That website tell you all the current and future projects for the state dept of transportation.

From the link MajorTom provided, here is the next project on Sunrise

"This project proposes to replace the current Wellwood Ave over NY27 aluminum girder bridge with a steel structure to maintain the strucural integrity and to provide a safer structure for the traveling public. Town of Babylon Suffolk County."

I never knew that the bridge girders on the existing are aluminum, I swear I have seen rust between paint jobs. Guess they will be replacing them all. Looks like a lot of money, hope it's really needed and not just going to line some of the favorite contractors pockets
