The major challenge to gravel driveways up here on Long Island is snow removal. Shoveling without scooping up the pebbles is nearly impossible. And forget snow plows. Also the minor annoyance of occasionally sweeping the gravel back from the road to your driveway. Been there and done that.
Now have the blacktop/belgian block combo and it has been 15 years of neat appearance, zero maintenance, nearly invisible oil stains, quick melting, and easy shoveling/plowing. No sealing. Just got the first minor cracks.
I agree you can't beat the look of gravel/pebble/ bluestone.
1 to 1.5 car wide and 2 car lengths is about $4500 from what I've seen.
I'm surprised concrete lasts 15 years without cracking. May have to go that route next... tired of the blacktop re-sealing and cracking (that won't stop after it starts).
we put in a new driveway 2 years ago. blacktop with 3 feet of pavers on each side. the village would only allow 1 10ft driveway and we knew we'd need 2 cars on it eventually for our son's car. now that we park on the pavers & blacktop, it works well but my husband's car had a small leak by the driver's side tire and the pavers are stained with whatever fluid fell from the car. other than that we love our new driveway - it was around 3000 -- we used torres construction
Super Clean and a power washer are your friend.
A properly installed asphalt driveway is the bomb.
Seal it every few years and it will look great and last a lifetime.
Dress it up with some pavers or block and you're all set.
The key is a proper installation.
Most of the asphalt driveways that fall apart within a few years are due to improper hack work.
If any driveway is done properly I'm sure they would all look great.
I am leaning towards the blacktop with brick border, but still open to concrete or pavers.
The blacktop I have currently is all cracked and needs a true replacing not just resealing.
I have a 3 car driveway and I got a local quote for stamped concrete... $20k!!!
I don't know what I'm doing but I'm not paying 20k...
