Ronkonkomam is a nice, well kept town. I have lived here most of my life and graduated from Connetquot. There may be an occasional shabby house but I've never seen a bad area of this town. RonCompton, give me a break.

Hawkins Avenue and the area around the Bavarian Inn aren't exactly nice. My mom's whole family lives/ has lived in the area and many of them are disappointed in the deterioration of the area around the lake. There are definitely some nice neighborhoods; such as around Sachem High School, Lake Hills, Northside Avenue A, B, C, D and the Cenacle area. The Lakeland area south of the L.I.E is also nice. Neighborhoods that aren't so nice; the number streets, most of the area between the L.I.E and Portion Road, and the area immediately around the lake.

Oakdale is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the southeast part of the Town of Islip, in the southwest part of Suffolk County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Oakdale in the Town of Islip is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Bohemia; on the east by the Hamlet of West Sayville; on the south by the Great South Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Great River.

The Hamlet of Oakdale has a different border than does the "Oakdale, NY 11769" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have an "Oakdale, NY 11769" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Oakdale): places that have a "Oakdale, NY 11769" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Oakdale are in the Hamlet of West Sayville and the Hamlet of Great River.

Ronkonkoma is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the northeast part of the Town of Islip, in the west part of Suffolk County, along the Islip/Smithtown and the Islip/Brookhaven town lines.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Ronkonkoma in the Town of Islip is bordered on the north by Lake Ronkonkoma, the Hamlet of Lake Ronkonkoma in the Towns of Smithtown and Brookhaven (the Islip/Smithtown and the Islip/Brookhaven town lines); on the east by the Hamlet of Holbrook; on the south by the Hamlet of Bohemia; and, on the west by the Village of the Islandia and the Hamlet of Hauppauge.

Thanks for the reply. I agree that the now closed Bavarian Inn looks depressing but there have been some decent improvements to the town and county parks around the lake over the last couple of years, including the removal of the eyesore trailer park. The neighborhoods between the LIE and Portion Road have a Levittown-ish, cookie cutter look but it’s pleasant. I forgot about the number streets though, I agree it’s not the most attractive part of Ronkonkoma.

Also, Ronkonkoma/Lake Ronkonkoma has one of the craziest borders of any other zipcode on Long Island. One minute you're in Ronkonkoma, the next you're in Holbrook, Nesconset, or Lake Grove. Therefore, some of the areas I'm referring may technically be in Holbrook. I know where my mom grew up was Lake Ronkonkoma and now is Lake Grove, also where my great-grandparents lived is now Nesconset.

Isn't that area in Lake Ronkonkoma?

For those who may not be familiar with Lake Ronkonkoma:

Lake Ronkonkoma is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) partly in the southeast part of the Town Smithtown and partly in the center-west part of the Town of Brookhaven, in the central part of Suffolk County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Lake Ronkonkoma in the Town of Smithtown and the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by Hamlet of Nesconset in the Town of Smithtown and the Village of Lake Grove and the Hamlet of Centereach in the Town of Brookhaven; on the east by the Hamlet of Centereach and the Hamlet of Holtsville in the Town of Brookhaven; on the south and west by the Hamlet of Ronkonkoma in the Town of Islip (the Brookhaven/Islip Town line and the Smithtown/Islip Town line).

Lake Ronkonkoma is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address: places in Lake Ronkonkoma have a "Ronkonkoma, NY 11779", "Nesconset, NY 11767", "Lake Grove, NY 11755" and "Holbrook, NY 11741"mailing address.

For those who may not be familiar with Holbrook:

Holbrook is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) partly in the east section of the Town of Islip and partly in the west section of the Town of Brookhaven, just a bit west of the central part of Suffolk County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Holbrook partly in the Town of Islip and partly in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by Hamlet of Lake Ronkonkoma, the Hamlet of Centereach and the Hamlet of Holtsville in the Town of Brookhaven; on the east by the Hamlet of Holtsville in the Town of Islip and the Hamlet of North Patchogue in the Town of Brookhaven; on the south by the Hamlet of Bayport and the Hamlet of Sayville in the Town of Islip; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Bohemia, the Hamlet of Ronkonkoma and the Hamlet of Lake Ronkonkoma in the Town of Islip.

The Hamlet of Holbrook has a different border than does the "Holbrook, NY 11741" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Holbrook, NY 11741" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Holbrook and a place can have other than a "Holbrook, NY 11741" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Holbrook): places that have a "Holbrook, NY 11741" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Holbrook are in the Hamlet of Lake Ronkonkoma, the Hamlet of Holtsville and the Hamlet of North Patchogue; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Holbrook with a "Bohemia, NY 11716" mailing address.

The Lake Ronkonkoma/ Ronkonkoma border is very much disputed. Many people claim Lake Ronkonkoma is anything north of Church Street and east of Rosevale Avenue. I think the best borders would be the Brookhaven/ Islip Town lines. Any part of 1779 in the Town of Brookhaven would be Lake Ronkonkoma and the area in the Town of Islip would be Ronkonkoma.

Hi. We will be renting a house off of Ocean Ave soon. Right now I am in Middle Country District ,which is TERRIBLE! I am really hoping that Connetquot is better. It has to be, right?!
