Here's a list of the most challenging housing markets. Fortunately, Long Island is not on it.

I also think that we need to change attitudes. Yees, housing is expensive, but you need to remember that we are close and commutable to one of the best cities in the world and one of the most important cities in the world. That comes at a price.

Also if new homeowners changed their attitudes about wanting everything perfect, wanting it all now and not willing to wait for it, we may have people who will actually begin to buy starter houses again that actually need some work.

There is nothing wrong with buying a home and then making it your home. I bought this house four years ago and while it wasnt 100% what we wanted, we were willing to compromise.

That works both ways. Maybe sellers can change their attitudes about trying to gouge an unjustified fortune out of buyers for handyman special starter homes we may have people who will actually begin to buy them.

Default Sellers

Hello everyone,
Very interesting thread, so many opinions and emotions. The market is a very confusing place for both the buyer and seller now. I have to say I am a seller right now in the Long Island market. I wonder what about the seller who has a home to sell that is truly in move in condition and priced right. It seems we get plenty of traffic in to look at the home and the feed back is all positive. It is very frustrating to us because most buyers now want a "deal", while we understand this it is still upsetting because a "deal" to most is stealing the home While we now we will not make a killing on this sale we still will not give it away. We have all the things done over that a buyer would look for: kitchen, baths, floors, etc.......Sometimes I think we may have overpriced the home for the neighborhood with what we have updated here. We are not selling a handyman special at a "regular" price. Rather we are selling a great house at a "regular" price. Thanks for letting me vent a bit!!!!!!! Good luck to all who are selling and purchasing.

I agree with both sides. Two years ago we tried to sell. The house was priced less than other houses in the area. We were told all time to lower it as we didnt have the fancy stuff ; granite, hardwood floors, stainless steel, etc etc. The house was only 5 years old so I jsut couldnt see putting the money into it and wasting everything that was practically new anyhow just to apease a buyer who would probably tear our and redo anyhow and also want a cheaper price. We decided not to sell and am glad that we stayed.

If it is priced ok, it will sell. A neighbour sold within days here recently. Nope, it didnt have granite, didnt have stainless steel or anything like it. Then another home was for sale for 2 years ; it was priced $20,000 more than the recent one. It has been taken off the market and rented.
