This concerns the power plant in Glenwood Landing, Town of North Hempstead. Many articles have appeared in the local press concerning the possible re-use of at least one of the buildings, as the power company (National Grid? PSEG?) no longer needs it. My question concerns its history, as the articles differ as to whether it is 50 years old or 100 years old!
----
When was electric power first produced at Glenwood Landing, and what was the company that produced it? Maybe it was the for the streetcar line that served Glen Cove or Sea Cliff.
----
If this plant was in service for almost 100 years, what were the successive companies that owned it? Long Island Lighting? Long Island Power Authority? National Grid? PSEG?
Many thanks.
Joe
Growing up in glen cove I fished off the power house outflow for snappers in a boat in the mid to late 40s.We always referred to it as just the power house the surrounding land was filled in with soft coal ash as that is what was burned there as a steam/ electric plant.
This old aerial photo is from 1938 so I'm guessing close to or over a hundred.
Defeinitely coal fired when designed and put in operation but coal hasn't been burned there in many decades. Fueled by natural gas since the mid 90's until it shutdown.
Station 1 was built in the early 1900s, and torn down in the late 40s to make room for Station 3. Station 2, the only building still standing, was built in the late 20s, and shut down forever in 1979. Station 3, built in the early 50s, was recently torn down. They all originally burned coal until 1963, converted to oil in 1963, then oil and gas. Station 3 stopped burning oil in 1990 or 91, and ran on gas only until it shut down a couple of years ago.
Oh, and Stations 2 and 3 were built by LILCO, and now owned by National Grid. I don't know what company built Station 1. There were a lot of small power companies back then. LILCO bought most of them up years ago.
By the way, Glenwood Station 2's unit #4 is identical to Far Rockaway Power Station, built at the same time by LILCO, and also being torn down.
Thanks all. Does anyone know where LILCO disposed of all that coal ash? Anyone know of Glenwood Landing plant employees from the 1960's who are still alive?
