Hello everyone,

We currently live in Brooklyn and my husband cannot stand his 2 hour commute to Melville on the belt every day.

We are looking into houses, but with little ones we can only afford 350k on one income.

Where would be the better place to live for a safer neighborhood as well as schools for the kids?

they're somewhat similar. Maybe Deer Park by a hair? If you're considering those areas then you should also look in West Babylon, Lindenhurst, Islip, or Bay Shore. If you can stretch your budget a bit maybe look at West Islip.

Deer Park better than north Babylon??? That's a first. While deer Park is fine, n Babylon is better.

Deer Park and North Babylon are extremely similar. I wouldn't say that one is better than the other. Both are solidly middle class somewhat-diverse areas with a sizable blue-collar presence and very reasonably housing prices. Both have sections that are pretty nice and some that are a little bit on the drabby side.

- The benefits of Deer Park is the LIRR stop and Tanger mall.
- The benefits to North Babylon is its proximity to the parkways and the nature of Belmont Lake State Park.

Deer Park Ave is the main road in both towns and is pretty congested at all points north of the SSP. But Deer Park Ave south of the SSP in North Babylon is not too congested.

Not really. Although similar, N. Babylon is nicer than Deer Park

NB schools get dinged a bit because they draw from part of Wyandanch. I don't think that's the case in DP.

There's really only 2-3 blocks of actual Wyandanch that are zoned for NB schools.

Sometimes people confuse a certain section of West Babylon [that's zoned for NB schools] with Wyandanch due to its close proximity and similar racial makeup. But this particular neighborhood is middle class unlike actual Wyandanch which is low income/working class.

NB school district is pretty much 50% North Babylon and 50% West Babylon.

I'm thinking of the area North of the SSP and west of Belmont Ave. My mistake if that's actually WB instead of Wyandanch (in terms of Hamlet). Regardless, it's always been pretty lousy and if I'm not mistaken it feeds into NB schools, correct?
