I am back on LI visiting family. Scrolling through the Optimum guide, I still see channels like BBC News and EuroNews that are still in SD, which looks horrible.

Best Buy stopped selling old fashioned CRT TVs back in 2005, I believe. I can't imagine anyone still uses one. These channels are definitely available in HD. Optimum has the bandwidth.

So why does Optimum still have SD channels? Is it a licensing issue?

I'm back up visiting family and tv has not been on. We have other issues of importance. Besides other than golf, hockey and baseball what else is on?

I have an OLED tv but still coax with Optimum/Altice.

In December 2016 there was a news report saying that Optimum was going to roll out fiber optic throughout their service area? Haven't seen or heard anything about it since.

https://hothardware.com/news/optimum...tomers-by-2022

Although the article title says "by 2022", that includes Altice France as well. According to the body text,

"Altice USA, the fourth-largest cable operator in the U.S., is investing in upgrading its entire network infrastructure to a ultra speedy fiber-to-the-home solution capable of delivering speeds of 10 gigabits per second by 2020."

Supposedly they starting installing the fiber optics in some parts of LI last January (2017); has anyone here got it yet?

https://www.newsday.com/business/opt...ice-1.13657447

And meanwhile I've been trying for 4 months to get someone from Cablevision/Optimum/Altice/whatever to come and identify which cables of the rats' nest of wiring from prior owners is THEIR cabling, so that when the house gets re-sided soon I will know which ones can be cut away. They keep promising that someone will call me back with an appointment but they never do. Even spoke to a (probably faux) supervisor . Riiight.

I figure there must be a price hike coming soon because all of a sudden they decided to give the lower tier subscribers like me a freebie of Showtime until the end of the year. Meh. It's probably a sweetener for a price jump in January.

Yeah they automatically extended my "promotional rate". Sent me a happy letter stating such.
I have bare bones service and only 2 boxes. They tossed in HBO, Starz, and Showtime for free.

my main complaint (and there are many) about Optimum is they should hire a few live human beings to route their calls instead of giving us 6.02x(10**23) voice mail options, none of which will lead to the correct person. If charging $200/month a customer these days, this should not be too large a stretch for them.
