My DH grew up in GC and lived in Port Washington for a time....everyone touts the PW line as being the best but his take on it is (as mentioned above) GC beats Manhasset on commute despite the longer commute time because you can always catch a train to GC. Miss your Manhasset train? You're out of luck for an hour.
Manhasset will be more expensive for the same size house. When we sold our house in GC I looked at similar houses in Manhasset just to see what we were up against (since you draw from the same buying pool) and houses there were a good $200K more comparatively speaking.
Personally I prefer the feel of the north shore, and DH has been up in GC several times this year and always comments on how dumpy the surrounding areas have become. You'll deal with less of that in Manhasset, but it's at the expense of convenience (but that's the north shore for you).
Areas around Garden City have been getting better -- not worse. Mineola and East Garden City/Uniondale have seen hundreds of new luxury condos built over the last 5 years. Even Hempstead has a new luxury rental. New Neiman Marcus wing at the mall. Huge Lifetime fitness opened. Nassau Coliseum renovated. More improvement is in the works. Sloan Kettering opening new cancer treatment center and Northwell opening a large research lab in Uniondale. Winthrop/NYU has a beautiful new wing in Mineola.
Elmont is getting a new home for the islanders, etc. Hard to see how someone thinks the area around GC has gotten worse. In fact it's gotten much better. That trend will continue and accelerate once the LIRR third rail is complete. GC also has a train option to LIC/new Amazon HQ. GC also has a direct line to Brooklyn which is increasing as a jobs center.

The port washington line has half hourly service whereas in Garden City the Hempstead branch runs every hour and to Brooklyn and the huntington line only stops in Merillon Avenue every hour. You also have easier access from Manhasset to Queens, Bronx, Westchester and even Northern NJ. Best thing of all is the port washington line doesn't go through Jamaica.

80% of Garden City can walk to the train and train parking is easier in GC if you need to drive. The actual time on the train from the New Hyde Park, Merrillon Ave and Mineola stations is maybe 5 minutes extra vs Port line. Trains from GC can also get you to Brooklyn and LIC easier than Port line. After third rail is complete trains from GC will be even better.

I don't care if they build 10 tracks...Jamaica will always bite the big one until they fix the signal system..something they don't seem to want to ever do...
Simply passing along that he DID commute on both and would choose GC for commuting...there are 5 stations on two different lines and most of the town is walkable to a station - parts of town are walkable from Mineola as well.
you passed along blatantly false information about "being out of luck for an hour".
LOL... well...Harlem is gentrified now. To the OP: talk the the realtors, go to the local parks, eat at the local restaurants, and speak with the schools to get a feel. One of the agents that helped us was based in Manhasset and had listings in both towns. In terms of the house, you’ll know as soon as you walk in. In all honesty, you can’t lose with either town. However, the sense of community in GC will be hard to beat. Good luck.
