I had no choice, but got transferred to nyc. But if I had an actual choice, it would have to be $75k MORE than my current salary. It's brutal. 4 hrs a day wasted. By yr 2, you will regret it.

I’m not going in now. When I did I went to Bethpage or hicksville depending on day. 6 miles, I hop on the highway. I’m maybe a mile from Nassau, took me 10 min usually. I don’t see any difference now as I take my kid to pre school same route as train and nothing seems to have changed. Huntington and CSH are closer 4.3 miles but they take the same amount of time to get to and cost more. In pre Foreign virus times no parking at CSH and Huntington sucks. hicksville and bethpage have easy street parking.

Interesting, I'm the opposite. I often wonder the min salary I would take to work on LI because I've been in the city prior to moving to LI.
Anyway, I'd say look at your current budget and factor in the additional expenses that you will incur. Then based on that determine the minimum you'd accept (factor in the $12 dollar salads if you don't bring lunch. All the best.

I did that commute for 45k a year. Not that long ago either, maybe 6-7 years ago.

You do what you gotta do.

Same. I find that it's really not so bad. I know someone who lives and works on L.I. and has to drive 30-40 minutes each way, longer in bad weather. I'd rather be sitting (or sleeping) comfortably on the train. I also appreciate the opportunity to unwind on the way home. I walk from Penn to my office and it's good exercise. And commuting keeps the wear-and-tear, mileage and gas usage on my car down.

There's good and bad in everything. All depends on how you choose to look at it.

I would say $100k would be acceptable.

In my field, if I had to commute 4hrs daily, I would need 800k minimum.

Times are tougher right now with fewer jobs to be had so definitely will put a figure on it and it's at least $115k. The problem with this line of thinking is you'd be lucky to get a job on LI for anywhere close to $100k depending on your industry.

Of course there are other factors such as mortgage amount if any.
