Yeah, as much as I love Long Island, I can't really see people moving here to retire from elsewhere.
I agree , I can’t see moving to Long Island to retire unless you are going way out East and wealthy ...but staying put and having roots already here and retiring is another story .....
Why would anyone retire to a place with most of the highest property taxes in the nation.
My aunt lives in now 4yr old condo was brand new when purchased. it’s a 3 min drive to Nassau county it’s in Suffolk. 1300 sq ft 2br 2ba she paid 390k for it taxes are $2600 with enhanced star with regular star they are $3900 $500 hoa it’s gated with amenities. I know her place isn’t the norm they’re are cheaper nice places. Her community basically sold out pre construction
The problem with Long Island is , it is not very affordable even with a paid off house .
When we all bought our first homes in Suffolk in the 1970’s ,that home was 35k ....that 30k mortgage was crushing to our incomes back then .
Well today that 30k mortgage is gone and taxes are 10-12k a year ....the fact the mortgage is paid off does not even have that mortgage that no longer exists cover the utilities today ...so being paid off can add little to affordability.
I know that this discussion is based around LI, and I'm in western NY. I can't help but comment on the post above, with respect to taxes. While the homes here in Monroe County are pretty reasonable, by comparison, our tax rate is pretty steep.
I'm in a 2100 sq/ft home, on a 1/2 acre lot. Assessment is around $260,000, but my taxes, county/town and school, run a little under $8000/yr. And since I'm over 65, that includes any applicable "senior citizen" discounts. And as the previous poster mentioned, it's one thing when those taxes are somewhat "hidden" in your mortgage payment, but it really stands out, when the house is paid off, and you get to see the tax bill, all by itself. It's about $160/week..........
Are there any houses actually in Lake Success? I thought as twingles said, it’s more of a zip code, iavaronne shopping center, and the Pro Health quad, etc.
Yes there are some really nice homes in LS. In fact, the recently deceased Whitey Ford lived there. But I am not aware of any downtown area in LS, unless they are calling the Shopping Center downtown.

I wouldn’t call it a downtown area, it’s pretty much union turnpike with a strip mall (the old Sears), some restaurants, and an LA Fitness in the other side of the street. A tiny section of Lakeville road is LS as well. The remaining buildings are all medical or commercial. To my understanding, this is LS proper. I thought the residential areas, which if I’m not mistaken, is a different zip code, was manhasset hills or great neck. I could be wrong though.

Has anyone even heard of the publishing source? I never have. I'll stick to US News, Money, or some other established source that has been doing this for a while.

I just did a quick search, I found this house as LS, although to me, that’s considered great neck?
