Why would anyone retire to a place with most of the highest property taxes in the nation.

lots of reaons .

family , grandkids , some of the finest medical facilities in the country .

endless choices in specialists .

we have an extensive public transportation system if you can't drive .

if you want to work a day or so in retirement we have high paying jobs unlike many cheap areas that are just mom and pop stores .

things to do 24/7 without getting bored .

i can go on and on.

we had a 2nd home in pike county in the poconos ....

no way could we retire there ...we sold it before we retired , it just lacked so much that is important as you age .

I laughed at that list. First, if you changed the title I might agree with some of the picks, but to suggest that Lake Success is among the best small town to retire to is absurd. I happen to live in one of the named towns and nearby two of the others and compared to NY, they are much better to retire to.

As mathjak107 points out there are different trade offs that need to be considered when making that decision, but this poll in my opinion is far from a reliable barometer.

Retiring in Great Neck is the dumbest idea. Pay tons of taxes when you have no kids to take advantage of the public schools. And a million bucks gets you some tiny outdated house. If you don't die before your retirement money runs out, you will be reduced to eating cat food.

A lot of these places are expensive. Grosse Point? Indian Wells? Carefree, AZ? We vacationed there. People there have $$$$$. Pinehurst is supposed to be very snobby. I mean yeah if you have enough money you can retire anywhere and enjoy it. Most of the ones in NC/SC are on the coast - flood insurance and limited HO insurance....again nice if you can afford to lose your house and its contents in a hurricane.

As far as NY...Lake Success? That's like a place on a map, a zip code. Imagine driving around there and thinking "yeah, this is it. Ahhhhh my dream retirement" LOL. NYC would be great when it's not going through one of its hovel stages.

Yeah, as much as I love Long Island, I can't really see people moving here to retire from elsewhere.

Are there any houses actually in Lake Success? I thought as twingles said, it’s more of a zip code, iavaronne shopping center, and the Pro Health quad, etc.
