Has anyone went the route of buying the pool/equipment themselves online etc. and hired a contractor to install ? Yes I know permits are involved.

I’ll tell you this, most pool companies will not want to deal with you. It’s just considered, like ya know, I mean you can try, but bigger reputable companies won’t deal with you. Most of my colleagues are booked solid, from last season, they just couldn’t get to all the work, they will not want to bother with you.
