This island cannot be fixed since if it the taxes were cheaper we would have too many people at boat ramps and if taxes were higher, you wouldn’t even have cashiers at cash registers.
Nonsense ....

People robbing other people to stay in Long Island

Let me tell you , the fact our kids and grandkids are local is priceless and all the reason one needs to stay in ny whether it is Long Island , the city or westchester.

There is a spelling error, correct. Unfortunately you do not get points for correcting spelling errors as that was in kindergarten.

You can see grandkids for free too if they lived in Kansas, or even better, Beverly Hills.

I think only Ny and Nj have a disaster of an politics system and that’s only done on purpose because they can’t be that dumb to tax people 5 times the national average or more.

There are two kinds of people remaining on this island, the stupid and the rich. The average joe has left or is leaving for obvious reasons.

After seeing how Long Islanders think, i wish I was I was a politician so I can tax the dumb population even more. They are dumb so why not mooch on them some more. They’ll believe their kids are going to good schools but truth is since they are genetically damaged (at this point the smart people have literally either left or came back with their business to mooch) in the hierarchy, this loop will keep on going.

I expect a lot of disappointment and frustration in response in their minds to this and that will confirm my choice about this. LI is for sure better than NYC, but why compare Li to a dump when you can compare it to another place that is far better off. And the problem with leaving Long Island is that there are just way too many places better than this one that people don’t make the choice.

I stay here because of my fishing spots

Well you seem so miserable and always complaining about LI. If I do leave you'll never find out. if you dislike it here so much leave.
there are great lakes and oceans elsewhere where you can fish you know.

No you are quite wrong ....trying to be long distance grand parents is not the same as as being an active part of their lives ...

You not only become a vacation stop over , or force them to spend their vacation time with you but it is like trying to have a pen pal as a girl friend .

If you think living ithousands of miles away is the same thing for grand parents ,you have a lot to learn about life.

If you don’t like it here , leave ...but telling others they are wrong for their reasons staying here is just nonsense

If you think living thousands of miles away is the same thing for grand parents ,you have a lot to learn about life.
I agree, my brother and his kids live in Ohio. My mom sees her grandkids maybe 2 two times a year. Because it's expensive and my mom's fear of flying she does not see them as often as she'd like and if she does fly I have to go with her and I can't take off and go sometimes. driving there could be an option but 8 hours in the car is too long for her. Plus the grandkids are involved with so many activities after school. My brother has not lived in NY since 1996. Grandkids were born in Chicago. It would be great if we were closer. The op is probably not married and has no kids so he does not understand.

3 million of us live here & a very very large number of us love it.

If you hate it so much, there are many ways off the island. Make sure you have $$ for the tolls and enjoy your bagel

So depending how much everything else goes up over time that paid off mortgage can be like peeing in the ocean as far as affordability
This has been my stumbling block in returning. I moved off the Island to the south right out of grad school 27 years ago, with the intention of eventually going back. I absolutely love my hometown of Northport (not crazy about some of the other aspects of the state as a whole) and wish I could enjoy all the Island has to offer as a adult. But, from a financial standpoint it makes no sense at all from a property tax perspective. Even after paying off a house, the additional $15k/year in taxes I would pay after 15 years would essentially cut into our retirement nest egg by approximately a quarter million dollars. Not something that makes sense or that I can stomach.

We had a second home in the poconos ...we owned it from 2007 to 2012 .

While it was nice ,we started to turn sour on living there full time when we got closer to retiring .

As we gave it more thought :

There was no public transportation system to get around if I couldn’t drive one day .

Everything was a haul to do .

Medical specialists were few

Medical facilities were few

There were no top tier hospitals like here .

When Gloria Estefan had her bus crash they air lifted her out of Scranton hospital to bring her here .

Winters were long , boring and cold with little to do except ski .

If I wanted to work a little in retirement everything was mom and pop stores at low wages .

The cost of living was not a lot cheaper for us because here we have a two bedroom 2 bath apartment in a nice high rise and no one lives with us .

In pa we had 6 adults and 6 kids for the holidays so we need to buy and support an entire house .

For now we enjoy being retired right here in bay terrace and while at times we miss the pocono house , everything we want or need is right here

To summarize staying on LI for family is dumb! But being here for fishing is smart.
