So my wife in due next week..first kid. Very excited. Not sure how mew paternity leave is but I’m told now men are entitled to it. We are all
Going all go back into the office In two week.
I work 1.5 to 1:45 away. I’m a little Leary of taking the time off as I think it’ll be frowned upon which I can understand to a degree.
Btw, Not sure how much time I’m entitled to.
I do manage the dept. and we are understaffed.
My job function definitely allows me to work from home which we’ve been doing for the last year.
Any thoughts ? Thank you

If you’re a manager you need to understand the policy. Are you expecting to get paid? “Paternity leave” leaves a lot to the imagination. “Maternity leave”’is actually a medical leave.

Bottom line: no one can answer this question for you.

Congrats by the way. You’ve posted before about decidingand trying to have kids. Happy for you guys! Do you know what you’re having?

Personally I woukd take the time and not sweat it.

You’re eligible for FMLA but it’s unpaid at the federal level.

Under the NY Paid Family Leave law I think in 2021 you get 67% of your pay for up to 12 weeks.

These are guaranteed to you by law, and you’d get reinstated in your current job upon returning.

Anything more depends on the company. I’d contact HR today to work through the details.

Some people will frown on this, but there’s nothing the company can do. You also don’t have to take the full 12 weeks - you could decide to take 8, or 4. But when you are off, you are off. Don’t play the “off but reachable” card.

Just FYI - if you’re taking the time to help your wife out, bravo. But you might find after a few weeks that you want to return to work

Congrats on the upcoming event.

I know they just passed a bonding act as well, where weeks 13-18 you can take, but it's no pay. Definitely speak to HR, they will know all the ins and outs. Congratulations, and best of luck!

I wouldn’t go beyond 12 weeks. At some point you get targeted for not being a team player.

Unfortunately there is still a lot of stigma out there about paternity leave in the US.

Everyone's work situation is different. I would not, nor would my husband, but I do agree with you. Just providing him the information he asked for.

Why not just ask to continue to work from home. Do you have a corporate job that you could manage both the job remotely at home and a newborn?
If you have been successfully working from home up until this point, be proactive and propose that to the job. Take days/time off as needed. It's a win/win for the job (someone doesn't have to cover your work) and you (benefit from the time at home).
Are you concerned about what co-workers are bosses may say....these jobs preach about work/life balances so have them back it up.
Do you work in the city and ride the LIRR/subway...whatever feelings you have about Covid, I certainly wouldn't want to be doing that 5x a week and coming home to a newborn.

As typical NY politics. Cuomo talked a good game first in the nation blah blah blah. I’m glad it’s low, it’s funded by WORKERS. They added a whole new tax in our checks for this crap.
