Ok so no arenas, sports venues, entertainment centers etc anywhere because there is some tax cost involved. Gotcha.
Let’s just have nothing. Buildings get old and need to be restored or replaced happens everywhere. It’s up to the local govt to decide if it’s worth having a team/venue or not. Vast majority of the time they do, sometimes they don’t (see San Diego)
"some tax cost" is the big unknown, and if these places fail (because now it's cool to have them in city centers instead of the suburbs, which was last year's idea), the taxpayer is on the hook .
Build all you want. Not with tax dollars or abatements. If every municipality agreed on this, the venues would still be built.
Lots of complaints by the surrounding residents (on various forums) about the negative traffic impact and people parking on the residential side streets.

Elmont residents say that the lack of on-site UBS Arena parking and Islanders fans not wanting to pay for parking created a major issue during opening night at the team’s new home.
Bob Barker, of the Locustwood/Gotham Civic Association, told News 12 that fans blocked driveways in the neighborhood.
“Cars were double parked on sidewalks creating a very dangerous situation,” he said.
So the person taking the job was forced to take it? What if it filled many jobs for people who needed them? If they didn’t need them they wouldn’t be filled no?
Those peanut vendors Making some good tips unless you don’t tip.
“ Economy in Zip 11003 (Elmont, NY)
Elmont (zip 11003) has an unemployment rate of 6.2%. The US average is 6.0%.
Elmont (zip 11003) has seen the job market increase by 0.9% over the last year. Future job growth over the next ten years is predicted to be 27.9%, which is lower than the US average of 33.5%”
Nice to see any type of jobs come into the community. Amazon was run out. Give the local
Community’s something extra to choose no?
This is our new governor praising it. Lots of improvements.
Yeah, I understand the new jobs.. but would be hard pressed to say that the Uniondale/Hempstead area has improved since the Nassau Coliseum was built back in the seventies.

The location of this arena is interesting. It is in Nassau, but as everyone knows, barely. The NHL is fourth out of the four major professional leagues in popularity, both nationally and in the NYC metro area. But yet they have three teams in NYC metro whereas the other three leagues have only two, and no where else in the country is their a metro area with three teams.
So how has this been working? The answer is that the Devils and the Islanders have carved a niche as sub-regional teams. Their modus operandi is to have a sub-regional footprint, but do very well within that footprint. None of the other NYC metro sports teams do this, and to the best of knowledge, no other teams nationally do this either. It's a plan that can work due to the overall size of the NYC metro area and the strict salary cap employed in the NHL.
Barclays was destined to fail before it even started because it was way out of the Islanders footprint (and it didn't help that it was a rink not designed for hockey). The Islanders have but a trivial following off LI (Nassau/Suffolk), and were never going to work as a NYC metro-wide team. This will always be true, as they have existed for 50 years and nothing will change in this regard.
The Coliseum location was ideal for them. It was more or less the center of the island. Of course not geographically, but by population density and culture. The fear with UBS is will it prove to be two far west? In the short term it will work. The hype and newness of the arena will create a lot of momentum. And the team itself is coming off of two great playoff runs. And of course it's a much better location than Brooklyn. But I am not 100% convinced it will work long term for them. LIRR access should help though.

They opened the new full time Elmont LIRR station specifically built in tandem for the Arena 2 days ago, it was the first new station built in like 50 years. So people saying its "hard to get to" with "no public transportation access" are full of it.
Casino. Bingo. This was the plan all along. God help the surrounding neighborhoods.
The plan was to close aqueduct and build a casino there and move all racing to Belmont, not to build a casino at Belmont. Regardless nothing is even close to even preliminary approval of any kind.

Parking at the arena is $30 if you prepay, $5 surcharge at the gate and up to $50 for special events.
I'm going in 2 weeks and just like at the coliseum. I will 110% be parking in front of someone's house for free.
