Hi,

Last night the tree in my front yard (~50 feet high) had one of three major branches fall. It wasn't windy or even raining and if anything I thought this was the healthiest out of the three. The rest of the tree has a lot of unhealthy and dead branches on it but I generally don't like killing trees so have kept it. But now the branch that fell went into my neighbor's yard and almost hit their car. It did damage all the green giants she planted a few years ago (they're snapped or down). She wants me to take the main tree down (and now so do I since it is not balanced with most of the weight and tilt towards my house). I'm worried now that this will fall on my house in the next storm. The tree has a lot of fungus all over it and even some holes in it so its def not safe.

The TONH requires a permit and that permit requires a lot of info. it seems like this can be a lengthy process. A tree guy is coming to remove and clean up the fallen branches and I'm considering having him take the tree down. I'm not sure what to do here since I find it to be unsafe now but the permit process seems like it will take a lot of time.

Has anyone taken down a tree like this without a permit and had the town find out? I have plenty of pictures and my neighbor is saying that they can write a letter saying the tree was a danger to our properties at this point. Not sure that matters...

Thanks

I would never get a permit to take down one tree on my own property. If you were clear cutting a plot I'd be more worried but your neighbor is on board and can vouch that it already damaged her property and wants it to come down. What if the tree comes down before the permit is approved? Think the town is gonna pay for your damage? They're not. IF and that's a big IF - they came asking simply say it was dead and time was of the essence.

If the tree has a lot of dead branches, and can reach your house, I would get it removed like twingles said. Like you, I don't like taking down trees unnecessarily. But if it is endangering your home and/or car, then I would do it.

What kind of fungus? If its like the below, then that is harmless. The below is lichen which does not kill a tree nor does it take anything from the tree. It just grows on it. It likes a lot of sunlight and gets its nutrients from the air and rain. So as tree branches die out and the lack of leaves no longer cover the bark, then it grows more on the tree. This leads to some thinking that the lichen is killing the tree when in fact it does not.

On the other hand, mulch volcanoes, which uniformed homeowners and landscapers alike seem to love and intentionally create, slowly suffocate/kill trees.

While no longer a resident, I know if you have such and issue you can contact the Building commissioner and explain that the tree is a hazard and you need to have it removed. The will allow on an emergency basis. You will still need the permit (of course $) but you will be able to get it down. Be prepared to put in a replacement tree, unless you can use sewer lines in the argument.

For the time being, can you trim the major limbs, so the tree is at least not a danger?
After that, you can worry about removing the tree itself.

If anyone asks, the tree fell on its own...
