^^ This right here sums it up for me. I’m willing to retire early at 59 1/2 and move off the island rather than stay & work till I’m 66. Life is way too short. Enjoy it while you can.

Especially when the out-go isn't really going anywhere except to line the pockets of retired civil servants. Most of whom take the cash and go.

Most people on this board who think you "get what you pay for" are on the gravy train. Fact.

Exactly I’ll be 55 wife 53 when youngest is out of HS. She will have to do 2 more years to max pension. We can retire here. Why would we, our Math shows staying here adds 6-8 years of working. I will enjoy spending her annuity and all our investments knowing I pre taxed allot all of it and don’t have to pay state tax on it.

So back to LI for a house.
Similar, but we were in Carmel. It's a beautiful place but completely out of reach.

Did you live there while Mayor Eastwood was in office?

Nice! About the same here! Best place to work! Not the best place to retire. Take the money & run! Especially to a state with ZERO income tax & Zero sales tax! No Brainer!

Grocery stores, restaurants etc. are close by and I don't have to travel very far to any of them. I hate the winter and the snow, & traffic. My taxes aren't crazy but they aren't cheap either. I think we pay about 7,000 for the year. We stay because both of our mom's are here and both have health issues. My husband would leave tomorrow if he had a choice and I can wait a few more years. We don't want to leave our mom's right now and they would never come with us. We both can take our jobs with us if we had to we would just work remotely.
Totally understandable. I would not forgive myself if something happened to my mom and I was not close enough to help. But that is a valid reason to stay even pen if you don’t like it here. I got the same issue with a spouse who will not leave due to family. Once they are gone, there is no reason to stay if you don’t like it.

It will be FL so they have higher sales tax. Cheaper prop taxes and no state cap gains offsets everything by far. We already have the house, it has 28 years left at 2.75%. It’s rented now we aren’t even paying for it!! Make that $$ in NY then leave.
