I have to say, I'm shocked at the bad information you've been given by these other posters.

Is Long Island safer than the 5 boroughs of NYC (Queens/Bronx/Manhattan/Brooklyn/Staten Island)? Yes. Absolutely. But is Long Island considered "safe" today by historical standards? Hell no. Google MS 13. They are all over LI.

Deer Park: You're generally fine. Don't head East towards Brentwood. Home of MS 13.

Freeport: This is where I'm shocked by other posters. It's one of the ghettos of Long Island.
Again, not NYC dangerous, but dangerous compared to most other LI towns. There is a beautiful strip of restaurants/bars in the Summer along the water. But the rest of Freeport is unpredictable.

As for your BMW and car jackings. Wow, you picked a bad time to visit. NEVER has NYC and LI had more car jackings than it is experiencing now. Criminals are literally following high end cars from restaurants, shopping outlets, bars, work, gas stations, you name it...following them either home or at red lights and car jacking them at gun point. Think I'm full of crap? All the articles below are recent events. Car jackers are stealing high end cars and then the cars are being sold overseas.

Tips: If you're driving, do NOT pull up close behind a car at a light or stop sign. Give yourself a car length of space in case you need to drive off quickly. Be careful exiting highways. They are waiting for drivers as they exit off the ramps. Be careful at gas stations and as you leave a store to get into your car. Double what I'm saying when driving at night. Look for people following your car. Usually the perps are driving their cars with out of state license plates (meaning not NY plates) or fake temp plates. Almost always tinted windows on their cars. Generally the perps have been young black/hispanic males. Typically wearing a mask/hoodie. Just the facts.

Police are generally not visible these days on LI. There is little to no police presence when compared to NYC and the NYPD. You're pretty much on your own on LI when it come to crime. This wasn't an issue years ago but the area has changed drastically over the last 15+ years.

Most stolen cars on LI are from idiots who leave their keys in their car at stores with the engines running.
Else its people who dont lock their car doors and leave the fob in the car at their house.
Hello.. we live in NY, not Wyoming....

Given the # of people and cars on LI, carjackings are rare. Keep your doors locked.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was planning on staying at the Deer Park Motor Inn because it less than 5 minutes from my destination, but looking at photos from Google, I think not.

Vast majority are. Modern cars are extremely difficult to steal without the fob. It’s almost always people who leave them inside the car.

You act like he’s coming from peaceful utopia to mad max. Get real. Crimes happen everywhere especially in population centers. The chances of anything happening to him here are still infinitesimal.

Do not stay at the Deer Park Motor Inn, it looks Scuzy. You are better off staying at the Marriot in Melville.

That’s a hard no. Melville Marriott, Huntington Hilton(it’s in Melville) slightly further but possibly cheaper, Hilton garden inn or homewood suites both on same property it’s in Melville but may be listed as plainview also. Any of the above are safe and comfortable and close enough.
