Looking at the Brighters Farms area. Would like to know for people who know Bayshore in general not just this area (Brightwater farms), what is there to do in this town or close by, are there any fun interesting things that go on (events, etc) whether seasonally or other. What are things to do with very small kids (1-5year olds) in this area? Where are the nearest best parks and playgrounds? Also things to do for adults (late 20's early 30's).

Bay Shore itself (the entire area, not just the main street) covers only six square miles, and so (just like the rest of Long Island) it's difficult to come up with a list of things to do "in" Bay Shore itself. There is a very nice YMCA; there is a nice little playground in the small Wohseepee Park in Brightwaters; the ferry to Fire Island leaves from Bay Shore and that's a very nice outing at any time during the summer.

Bay Shore is a waterfront area and during the year they do have several festivals and at least one shark fishing tournament that I know of.

In order to make more useful suggestions, it would help a lot to know what interests you and your husband have, the kinds of things your kids like to do, and how much of a distance you'd be willing to drive in order to get to the attractions or other things. For instance there's a beautiful aquarium (Atlantis Marine World) which both kids and adults love... but it's in Riverhead which is at least 45 mins away (depending on how fast you drive). Splish Splash Water Park is also very popular but again it's out in Riverhead, which is at the end of the Long Island Expressway.

If you can give an idea of how far you'd be willing to drive (timewise, one way) it would be a lot easier to make up an "attractions" list.

Default don't forget the library!

I should have included this in my earlier post.

An excellent but often-overlooked resource for fun things to do on Long Island is one's local library. Aside from the Suffolk County Library System being one of the best as far as access (you can borrow almost anything except brand-newly-arrived books and videos from any library in the county via Interlibrary Loan), the individual libraries always have a constant flow of events and activities for both adults and children.

The Bay Shore-Brightwaters Public Library has just recently reopened after an extensive expansion and renovation. I haven't yet been there myself but have driven past it a couple of times in the past few weeks and it looks absolutely gorgeous. You can visit their homepage at About the Library (http://bayshore.suffolk.lib.ny.us/about.htm - broken link) and then the link for Upcoming Events to see what's on tap for Fall 2008.

bayshore marina (and others close by), plenty of bars and restaurants on main street, ymca, plenty of shopping including the south shore mall, plenty of small playgrounds/parks and schools all around, pool hall and minigolf (although the mini-golf is really low budget but the Heartland golf complex is only about 10 minutes away and much nicer, has mini golf, driving range, and a small course), robert moses and captree state parks only about 10-15 minutes away
