My kids already ride the bus, but it sounds like many more would become eligible to do so. I would not enjoy having 2 young kids in 2 different elementary shools, but I'll deal with it if I have to.
I have no idea what she could be complaining about, but the borders of the RVC school district are notoriously illogical in certain spots. And, FWIW, the school district does include the "bad" part of town just north of the King Kullen.
The actual district boundaries are very difficult to change--I believe the state legislature would have to do this. Any board proposed rezoning would be about boundaries within the district.
As for the "affordable housing", I read about that on here. It's not going to overwhelm the schools. It's just usual LI paranoia about ANY kids who aren't "us". Honestly, this issue is one of the few good reasons for district consolidation.
I know that some of the residents by me were flipping out over a possible affordable housing complex because they felt the schools would become overcrowded.
They too said it would ruin kids lives.
They already have a section 8 housing project tucked away in a little corner for the PC poseurs to feel good about. Affordable housing for working people with a minimum as well as maximum income is a better deal for the residents than the project is!
There was a school board meeting on Tuesday night, which was supposed to be televised last night but I could not find it. My neighbor told me that one proposal is to close the Watson school and divvy up the students among the remaining 4 elementary schools. They also may ask parents to pay for sports and shorten the school year to the minimum required by law. I am taking a wait and see a approach until I get the info straight from the source!
Very sad to see this befall a well-regarded school district. Fortunately not all districts are in trouble. Valley Stream's financial health was rated the best for July 1, 2007 - June 30, 2008 in the latest independent annual audit. The District received an "unqualified opinion" rating, which is the best one can get.
The Watson thing never flew. There are five elementary schools in RVC.
