My husband and I fled Long Island in October. We just couldn't take it with the high cost of living which includes overpriced homes and outrageously high taxes.

My brother, who lives in Denver, frequents the Newsday.com site.. after all Long Island was our home for 25+ years and so we do get nostalgic and are curious as to what is going on. Apparently there was an article about pensions and a searchable database. My brother searched the pensions of our former teachers, super etc.

Here is the email:

Quote:
There was a story on Newsday.com yesterday about NY State Pensions. It had a searchable database where you could basically search any state or local employee’s pension. Now it is mysteriously gone. Hmmm. Anyway, I searched a bunch of my former NBHS teachers. Pretty much their average pension was $60,000 – $70,000/year!!! I’m pretty sure all of them retired in their 50’s. Must be nice, huh? Cuneo’s pension is close to $100,000!!!! WTF. You should have seen some of the other pensions listed for former state employees. The top guy was making over $300,000/year.
WTF is damned right! It's lunacy. Long Islanders.. you are being raped. You can continue to bend over and take it, or you can do something about it..like ban together and breat this ridiculous cycle...

I left.. I have better things to do with my time and my life than to fight for something we shouldn't have to fight against. I'd rather have more of a quality of life than put up with this nonsense.

Anyone thinking of moving to LI. It's beautiful.. but it's so not worth the price tag you are going to pay..one that continues to climb. Unless you are pulling in well over $150K as a family, you won't ever be "comfortable" there. Costs are out of control.. and so is the beaurocracy!

The reason people are unhappy with this is because of the incongruity. However, chopping away at pensions addresses a symptom, not a cause. There wouldn't be incongruity if others in the private sector were getting paid what they were worth. Ross Perot's giant sucking sound has been heard all around the US as jobs, pay and benefits have been vacuumed out of the country.

People are pointing at the wrong things.

I agree with you to a certain extent. I also left LI in DEC 08 for the same reasons but I'm also collecting a 96,000 tax free NYS pension also and I'm not in my 50's but late 30's. I guess I'm taking my NY money and spending in VA and boy does it go a lot further

what did you do in NYS that you started collecting a pension like that at 30!! yOu're getting paid that money to NOT WORK and many people don't get paid that much TO WORK!!!!

And actually you are then part of the problem.

This has nothing to do with incongruity; if this is true (and I doubt it) it is nuts.

LOL. this is just one thing!! THERE ARE MANY. We're talking about local levels.. and on local levels (long Ilsand, not the nation). It's insane. Why did my property taxes on a little tiny Levitt house have to be $7,000 a year! Here I could own 3 acres and a brand new 4 bedroom house that is over 2000 square feet and maybe I would be paying $5000 in property taxes!!!

BEcause part of yoru taxes goes to pay pensions that are ABSURD.. among other ABSURD things on LI.

I got tired of hearing people complain about taxes. but then every year vote their stupid budgets through like mindless sheeple

Again, I won't throw cops under the bus for living well. What is sad is that you can't make enough to pay the taxes so they can live well. It is extremely difficult for people to live well on Long Island who don't have jobs in finance and who haven't had their houses willed to them by their parents.
