I would actually use OLD Nichols Road as it runs diagonally from Islandia to Lake Grove and is a pretty road to drive on.

Yeah, Old Nichols is better option, just remember that the speed limit is 30 MPH. From my experience, most people seem to think it's 50.

I haven't been on Old Nichols in a long time and can't recall: Is it 2 lanes in both directions (like Nichols) for its entire length or is it just one lane in each direction? Or does it vary between one and two lanes each?

Thinking "volume delays" here if only one lane each direction...

I'm also thinking there may be fewer traffic lights on Nichols than on Old Nichols but again, I can't recall offhand. Nichols is a very fast run southward from the LIE to Montauk Highway (no lights at all, just exit ramps).

It's 2 lanes, and there are some big time volume delays during the teeth of rush hour.

Ah, so 2 lanes total? Meaning one lane in each direction. No wonder there are delays on it.

At least Nicholls is 4 lanes total (2 in each direction) and again I'm assuming more lights overall on Old Nichols.

Also Nicholls has decent length turning lanes for intersecting streets, in addition to the 4 "through" lanes.

Knew there was a reason why I don't take Old Nichols.

6 of one half dozen...some of the lights on Nichols shouldn't be there (the one in Farmingville by the offices..why is that needed? There are other ways to get to the LIE) and they cause backups as far as the eye can see.

On old Nichols, the intersection at Smithtown Blvd is a nightmare with traffic backing up almost to Motor Parkway some days.

I used to use Old Nichols as an alternative on days when the LIE was very heavy.

Well. Before I took LIE to Islip and it definitely was killing me. Now according to my gps, I take sunrise highway or veteran highway to 347. well. I pretty much feel like they are the same thing.

Where about in Islip -- major intersection?

About what times of day are you doing the commute, what direction at what time?

If I leave 27A in West Sayville (over by Golf Course and Truck shop) @ 5PM I will take Lakeland/Ocean/Rosevale/Gibbs Pond/Lake Ave So/25A into Stony Brook.

That light isn't there any longer.

The one just north of Horseblock? I would have sworn it was there when I was heading northbound on Sunday afternoon.
