My husband and I have one child and one on the way. We are looking for a two bedroom apartment that costs a maximum of $1600 (incl. utilites). We need to stay in Nassau because our daughter receives Early Intervention through the county. We're hoping to move to Suffolk or elsewhere when she stops qualifying for services.

He wants to live in an apartment complex but I think he is delusional as my research has shown most are too expensive. My only requirement is that we live someplace safe (ie. no Hempstead- which was one of the only affordable places). I also think that we won't be able to find a two bedroom in Nassau for that price. In addition we are a young, interracial couple if that makes any difference as to where you'd reccomend.

Does an apartment complex like this exist or will we have to live in someone's house? Also, which areas would you reccomend (my husband works in Plainview & would prefer no more then a half-hour commute)? Thanks so much!

For some reason we aren't allowed to post links to Craigslist ads on here, but I was able to find at least one that fits your criteria on there....though honestly, I usually don't see such great ads on CL for Nassau/Suffolk. I don't know how people find apartments on LI aside from CL or driving around....might be a good idea to find a broker who specializes in rentals.

On LI Craigslist, search "locust valley". The posting is through a broker and titled "SUMMER SPECTACULAR", listed with a bunch of other apartments on the north shore:

Mint 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, EIK, parking, 1st floor, large deck, use of pool, $1600 all utilities included.

Sounds promising!! It's probably right near the Locust Valley LIRR, which should be less than a 30 minute commute to Plainview. Nice area, too.

Good luck!

Is there any reason your daughter can't qualify for Early Intervention in Suffolk? If nothing else, it should be transferable...

we had a three bedroom 1st floor of a house rental in farmingdale for $1675 which included all utilities, though some people feel farmingdale is on the low side of where they want to live. i think there are a lot of affordable apts there though, craigslist is the way to go.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I don't know about Craigslist, but that's my opinion. Pretty shady people on there.

I know there are apartment complexes in East Meadow...but I don't know where, how much $ or if they are even available. It's a decent neighbourhood, though...no LIRR...you have to go to Hicksville or Bellmore maybe. But it's probably like 20 mins to Plainview.

Early intervention is provided by NY state.. not county. But your early intervention specialist is probably going to change.. and since your child and you are used to him/her you might not want to change that.

1600 with utilities is probably too low for apartment complexes in Nassau, but you many find parts of homes in places like Mineola / Hicksville that will have 2 bedrooms for that price.

Our EI coordinator said that she couldn't guarentee our that the services our daughter receives now would transfer to Suffolk County & that most likely she'd have to be reevaluated on their scale (whatever that is). In addition, my daughter has been making tremendous progress with ther current therapists which is the main reason for staying in Nassau. Thanks everyone for your reccomendations!

My daughter suffered a stroke in-utero and received early intervention services (primarily PT/OT at our home) through Suffolk County, not through the state.

As soon as she entered the school system at age 3 for Early Intervention Pre-School, the school district became responsible for her services.

It is likely that NYS provides some of the funding for EI, but Suffolk County's Division of Services for Children with Special Needs was the organization that administered all of it and was who we had to interact with.

While I'm sure the services could transfer from Nassau to Suffolk, I understand the OP's concerns of going through the re-evaluation and then getting different providers assigned.

This is true. It's the county that handles the evaluations, etc. In Nassau it's under the aegis of the Board of Health. She'd have to get re-evaluated in all likelihood.
