Umm the Rockaways have a lot of shadey parts. Shootings, people jumping in front of your car. You could do Long Beach and just take the Ocean Parkway. I think you would get to Commack in a good 35 minutes.

I still think if you want to be close to an Ocean Beach to go surfing regularly, and be a short commute to Commack, be near Robert Moses, not on the North Shore. That means get an apartment in the Islips.

My buddy surfs and the best spots FWIH are west of Jones Beach and East of Smiths Point.

I dunno, I drive down on the Loop & Ocean parkways a lot and I'm pretty sure it takes more than 30 minutes to get from the Loop entrance off Lido Boulevard to the Robert Moses Causeway...I think getting to Commack would be well over an hour from anywhere in Long Beach.

Google Maps says "35 minutes" using the Meadowbrook and SSP but that is total BS. Meadowbrook NB is usually a parking lot in the morning.

I like the way dman72 is thinking, anywhere between Islip and Babylon is probably your best option on the South Shore.

Getting from The Rockaways to anywhere in Suffolk is insane and yes it does have some of NYC's worst neighborhoods. Great surfing from what I hear, though!
