I teach in Jackson Heights at 34th and 80th. The good thing about this area is the number of highways that you can take. The Cross Island, Grand Central, LIE and even the Van Wyck are all pretty good in the morning. I have a friend in my school who lives in Northport, and he makes it in an hour or less.

Hi Joanne - Thanks for the reply. Do you know what route your friend takes in the morning? How is his drive home? Would the HOV lane help out. As you can see, I would love to live in Northport/Centerport, but I'm afraid the drive might be a bit too much. My wife has no issues in the morning because she is on the road early. It's the ride home that worries us.

Thanks for any answers you can give!

if your wife is driving only herself though, she can't use the HOV lane...

He usually takes the Grand Central. The afternoon is worse then the morning. What time will your wife be going home? When I leave work by three, I can make it home in half an hour (Nassau County), but if I am not on the road until 3:30 or 4, i can double my commute.

When my family was still living in Queens, I used to make a point of being east of Route 110 before 3:30. After that, the traffic thickened up.

Default commuting SUCKS

It gets old. Take your time and pick the right house. Limit your daily commute.

Why not take LIRR from Huntington and eventually transfer at woodside for the 7? The LIRR is the the best commute and it saves gas and the awful wear and tear the city streets do on your car. Plus you can sleep, read a book or newspaper, or do work on your computer. The LIRR can be made cheaper by payroll deuctions and by using AMEX. Also, I live in one of the areas that you mentioned liking and without a doubt it is worth the commute!
