I gave a link for parking right off of Times Square -- excellent rate, right in the thick of things.
Icon Parking Systems - Coupon Details (http://www.iconparkingsystems.com/Coupon_Details.asp?Coupon_Id=27&type=I - broken link)
I prefer driving in as opposed to having to deal with the trains, especially if heading to an evening performance on a week night.

Ehhh train is still cheaper though...although if she has to drive, then she has to drive, train clearly isn't an option.

For me personally though, I'd never leave my car in those garages. From my understanding you have to leave your key with them until you come & get your car back. Leave my brand new car's keys with a person I don't even know so he can go take a joy ride with it? No thank you.

Train (from out this way) takes longer and you have to park in an open, unattended lot (Ronkonkoma station is subject to break-ins.) If I have to meet friends for dinner @ 7PM, I have to leave my house at 3:50 to catch the 4:40 to get in by 6. Miss that and the next train is not for another hour. Driving, I leave my house by 4:30 -- 40 mins later than I would for the train.

You're tethered to the LIRR schedule...miss the 11:16 and you have to sit and wait until 12:14 (which won't get you to Ronk until 1:30ish AM with a 20 min ride in the car home.)

As for the parking services...they are BUSY in the theater district. Forget the image of the carefree valets joyriding in Ferris Beuller's Day Off. I'd sooner valet with an attendant in an indoor NYC garage than with some snot-nosed brat or weed-addled Dude at a LI catering hall. As for the new car -- I've seen some very nice cars. I wouldn't think twice about leaving a high end car, let alone any new car.

As for train being cheaper -- from Nassau, yes. There's always a few of us driving in from my neck of the woods, making the cost of the garage ($15) plus gas ($10) the cheaper option.

True but I used to live in Merrick...the trains are very frequent there and it's 45 mins, vs. what is it to come from Ronk, also cheaper. It's a trade-off. If I lived in Ronkonkoma, it's prob be worth it to drive. Points closer to the city, the train as much as it sucks, is probably the better deal and better bet. Ehhh to each his/her own though. I've seen & heard some pretty crappy things regarding parking garages in NYC...joy-rides, break-ins, scratches/dents etc...although I suppose those are not unique to just parking garages though. They can happen at train stations too, except for maybe the joy-rides. (Those by the way, happen a lot more than you think. There was a news segment about it. They had surveillence cameras showing parking attendants driving around the city in people's cars).

When I lived in Massapequa we always took the trains -- didn't give it a 2nd thought.

As for the parking garages, I prefer the enclosed garages to the open ones. Less public access to the vehicles, greater employee supervision. The garage I have used every time I go in has 2 entry/exits. Employees work in the middle and never get close to the entry/exit ramps with the vehicles. The possibility of a joy ride is so slim...also, they're supervised on camera; why risk one's job for a jaunt in a Chevy or Lincoln. Scratches, dents can happen in the train station parking lot, the supermarket parking lot -- it's one of the 'joys' of owning a car.

The only lousy parking story I've head in NYC happened to a young family member in a snooty hotel parking garage and it did involve over $1K in damage.
