The closest center I can think of is Tutor Time on Jericho Tpke in New Hyde Park (it's just about 1/4 mile east of New Hyde Park Road). I think there is a daycare associated with St. James Lutheran Church in Franklin Square, just over the border from GC. I've lived in GC for over 12 years - almost every person I've met who has childcare uses a nanny, but I think that is slowly changing.

thanks for your help!! In your experience do you think $2k is an appropriate estimate for a nanny or is it higher? Is it very rare in that town to have 2 parents working, do you think it would be tougher than other towns as far as dealing with the schools?

I have no idea how much a nanny costs, so I can't help you there. If you have the time, I'd suggest hitting one of the parks in town and chatting up the moms that are there with little ones and asking if they use daycare or a nanny. Like I said, the days of GC being an exclusively stay-at-home-mom town are coming to an end. Most of the younger moms I know work. Even moms that have older kids are going back to work when they can find it.

I don't think the schools would be hard to deal with if as a working parent....I can tell you that I'm seeing less opportunities for parental involvement in the K-1 school than I saw a few years ago (a lot depends on the teacher too) - but I think the schools are going to have to start adjusting to the fact that more and more families here in GC are going to be 2-working-parent families. My sister lives in Huntington and I don't see much difference in how the schools handle things there than here.
