OG is fast food Italian. It's just not that good plus the long wait. For what??? Crappy food? I used to love boulder creek but I have found latley the food is not as good anymore same with outback. I used to love the ribs but last tiem i had ribs at boulder creek they were fatty and grizzle. I agree that carabbas food portions got smaller but I'd go there over OG. Yes mom and pop Italian restaurants can be hit or miss but I will say that Verace's and Vespa are always good everytime we go. There was an Itlalian restaurant in Commack that we loved but it closed down and the property owner of the tiny strip mall it was in took over the space. I cannot remember the name of the place but it was not far from commack movie theater. Also Lucky duck is another Itallian restaurant located in Garden city on nassau blvd. Food is always good, never had a bad meal there. The Lucky Duck | Pasta - Pizza - Grill | Garden City South NY
We just went to Boulder Creek over the weekend. I agree, food was not as good as it has been in the past. Au jus sauce was tasteless. In laws had sliced filet mignon steak which FIL said was very tough. And prices are need cheap.
The problem with the mom and pop italian restaurants is their consistency. One day the it's the best food you ever tasted, the next day it tastes like it was left out since the day before. I have 5 italian restuarants (not pizzerias) in my immediate area and at best they are hit or miss. Why pay the higher price for so-so food? And for what it's worth, Olive Garden's food, in my opinion, is consistent.
I understand the consistency or predictability angle, but what good is that when it's consistently crap? Better to take the unlikely chance that a local place will be worse than OG than go with guaranteed mediocrity, and that's without even factoring in the absurd wait times...
Smokin Al's is extremely overrated IMO, their food is mediocre at best. My dad always claims that Applebee's has better ribs.
Hmm never had Apple Bee's ribs. I do miss Bobby Rubino's ribs. I only like the baby backs anyway. My favorite at boulder creek which is always good is the blooming onion.

I don't know, I just find the name of a local place, go to urbanspoon and read the reviews. That helps more than anything else.

Yeah I usually read the reviews online as well. Also just because it is Zagat rated does not make the place good. I also go by recommendations. I'll try any place once, if it's good i'll go back if not then I move on.

Pretty much all of the fast food places are Zagat rated in one way or another.. KFC is actually #1 in Zagat*

I like Smokin Al's, but I really like Famous Dave's ribs. Mostly for the sauce they use.
Not so much a fan of Smokey Bones or Outback's ribs.
Worst I ever had was at a place called Babylon Chicks in West Babylon. They actually kept them hot in steam trays! Didn't last very long.
