After you've lived in LA a long time, does the Hollywood sign still conjure up any emotion? I think the sign is awesome. And I bet that's due to the fact that it's an image in my mind that pre-dates my earliest memory. I can't remember the first time I saw a picture of it. Probably some maze on the back of a cereal box when I was little, help Toucan Sam make it to Hollywood. I like to click around on google maps, seeing all the angles and distances I can still see the sign. It amazes me that normal people can be living their day to day lives, while seeing that sign on a daily basis. You don't have to be a millionaire to live in visual proximity to the sign.

I think the sign is a cool landmark, though I wish they lit it up at night.

Me too! I don't understand why it's not lit up.

i think it's cool, but you get used to it after a short time since you can pretty much see it from anywhere in the city. i second the idea of lighting the sign, but apparently the neighbors who live up there won't allow it.

I wish they would restore it to the original "Hollywood Land"

Not only should they bring it back to its original name of Hollywoodland, they should also light it up at night. Why do a select few who live in the hills get to mandate what would benefit the larger population?

In all seriousness.....I might be stating the obvious but the Hollywood sign is to LA as the Eiffel Tower is to Paris or the Statue of Liberty is to NYC. That statement might raise some eyebrows in NYC or France....but the sign is so closely linked to the city.

What I like about the sign:
1. The hillside location is beautiful and is a reminder about the unique topography of the city.
2. The sign's importance grew over time....at first it was just an advertisement for a real estate development. It was an "eyesore" to some just as the Eiffel Tower was when it was first built.

Lastly, I will plug the Watts Towers. I think it's a shame more Angelenos are not familiar with this incredible piece of folk art. In another location...it might have the same place in our collective conciousness as the Hollywood sign. That is too bad.

Love the Hollywood sign. Love it.

When I live in Orange County I used to make notes on from where it could be seen on clear days. Tops of freeway bridges. Tall buildings. There is even spots in Tustin where it can be seen from several "flat" places.

And I agree that the Watts Towers are pretty special too!

Its just a sign. It doesn't make the city any more affordable or the traffic any less frustrating.
