riiiiiight... because being comfortable on a hot southern L.A. day and artistic expression is suuuuuuuuuch a big gang problem.

You should try "baggie" pants someday. They are very comfortable.

after all every fat person with a slightly dark complection, in a Hawaiian shirt and shorts is Hawaiian.

Default You Know This Is Amazing.

I must admit my mouth fell OPEN looking at Bizby Knolls...THAT WAS A SHOCK! But I know Carson well and it has always been a pretty safe and decent place...we grew up knowing lots of people there...still do...but YOU WILL NEVER SEE this on the news...NEVER! And thos of us who grew up and have family in these areas wonder why? It's amazing growing up and attending private school how "concern" some of my white friends' parents were about kids coming over for sleep over or activities (we lived in Gardena in the Seventies, all middle class black) and when they would come you could see the SHOCK on their faces...you just knew they were expecting everything they ever saw on the news...knowledge really is power.

So, just what is a 'black neighborhood' like in LA? More affluent than the average white neighborhood in one of the most affluent countries in the world. Somehow, perceptions of gangs and 'Colors' still linger as the sole defining aspect.

Here are some facts: Ladera Heights is 70% black and it's (only) ZIP code 90056 touts a higher per capita income than Rancho Palos Verdes' 90274.
Ladera: Livingchoices.com: Real Estate - New Homes, Homes for Sale, Apartment Rentals (http://www.livingchoices.com/community/communitydetails.aspx?mid=4480&zip=90056 - broken link)
Rancho Palos Verdes: Livingchoices.com: Real Estate - New Homes, Homes for Sale, Apartment Rentals (http://www.livingchoices.com/community/communitydetails.aspx?mid=4480&zip=90274 - broken link)
Ladera also has a lower rate of poverty. ...but perceptions and assumptions tell us otherwise. There is a lot of envy-based resentment and that always seems to come from 'below'.

More facts: Carson's 90746 covers half of the city and 5 distinct, overwhelmingly black neighborhoods. Carson borders Compton as well as Torrance. Here is the crime rate for Carson's 'black' section
Livingchoices.com: Real Estate - New Homes, Homes for Sale, Apartment Rentals (http://www.livingchoices.com/community/communitydetails.aspx?mid=4480&zip=90746 - broken link)
Now look at the crime rate for 90210
Livingchoices.com: Real Estate - New Homes, Homes for Sale, Apartment Rentals (http://www.livingchoices.com/community/communitydetails.aspx?mid=4480&zip=90210 - broken link)
Now look at the crime rate for neighboring Bixby Knolls in Long Beach
Livingchoices.com: Real Estate - New Homes, Homes for Sale, Apartment Rentals (http://www.livingchoices.com/community/communitydetails.aspx?mid=4480&zip=90807 - broken link)
As far as Carsonites are concerned, 'black neighborhood' means safer... overwhelmingly safer. In fact, Carson's 90746 has nearly the same crime rate as million-dollar 'white' Laguna Beach
Livingchoices.com: Real Estate - New Homes, Homes for Sale, Apartment Rentals (http://www.livingchoices.com/community/communitydetails.aspx?mid=4480&zip=92651 - broken link)

It's time to stop clinging to old perceptions and assumptions. It's time for black folks in LA to take as much pride in their neighborhoods as other do in their more dangerous or poorer areas.

This article explains pitfalls experienced by many African-American middle and upper class neighborhoods.

I have a feeling that the issues in the article will someday be overcome by the said neighborhoods. Since this was written in 2004, some people feel PG County, Maryland overcame some of the issues in the article.

If emulating gang bangers is "artistic expression", I really have to ask then if it's an artistic expression becoming to a neighborhood.

I agree. That never happened in Ladera Heights or Carson. Those residents are just worried about the propensity of 'some' to be serial killers... or Menendez... or Tate... or Alhambra guy - which would put Dominguez Hills on the 'notorious' crime map like Bev Hills.
