The Wilshire Grand project was formally approved by the City Council today for downtown L.A. The project will replace the Wilshire Grand Hotel with two towers -- one a 65 story hotel/condo tower, and the other a 45 story office tower, at the corner of 7th and Figueroa. Project site here:
Wilshire Grand Redevelopment

Construction begins later this year, and demolition of the current property will take approximately a year. Korean Airlines owns and is driving this project.

Good news for those that like to see the skyline go up up up!

Does anybody actually "want" to go to downtown? Or, do they "have" to go either for work or to see a Kings or Clippers game? Downtown: traffic, parking hassles, panhandlers - anything else?

Downtown has some great bars such as Edison, and a lot of great restaurants. A lot of people want to not only visit downtown, but live downtown. I live in Glendale, but I definitely like visiting downtown.

I understand there are things to do there but other than a person's job or Staples or one or two other unique venues there, it seems like such a hassle to navigate there. For example, aren't there other "great bars" more conveniently located to you (or just about anyone else)?

Maybe, but there probably aren't 50+ restaurants, 30+bars and nightclubs, historical architecture, music, arts, theatre, etc all within really easy walking distance.

Probably not the place for a family, but as a single person I find it fantastic. Walk 20 minutes to work every day, walk 3 minutes to the grocery store. Happy hour at the posh upscale 1920's themed Edison is $18, including tax and tip, for a martini, grilled veggie sandwhich, and sweet potato fries. Going to see the Clips vs Mavs tommorow night, John Mellencamp in a couple weeks. Don't have to touch my car for any of those things.

Well sure, if you dont happen to live in Metro Los Angeles.
It would be impractical to pass up closer venues to deal with traffic and parking. But like most cities, the downtown area serves as the City I.D. badge, a starting point, representing what that particular city has to offer visitors and local residents who appreciate what sets it apart from other cities.

I would live downtown if I worked downtown or very close to it. Avoiding the traffic 5 days a week would be totally worth it to me.

Like it was mentioned above, there are some pretty fun events going on...good art scene, bars, restaurants, easy access to hollywood and freeways etc..but realistically, I would be looking for a place in south bay on the beach for the weekends as a getaway.

prices have come down in the area..good deals compared to a few years ago, unlike some areas in west la where housing drops are not as prevalent.

panhandlers are not exclusive to downtown. I was on Rodeo Drive and to my surprise ran into some panhandlers. Downtown is my favorite part of LA. I've actually been looking into moving there. It is by far the most walkable hood in LA. Great restaurants with many more coming. Great happy hour spots, a nice Ralphs, nightclubs, galleries. Even a new Target is coming next year. Art Walk, the Lakers, LA Philharmonic, catch a movie, coffee shops, Grand Central Market and some of the most interesting and beautiful architecture in the city. All of this without the need of any automobile. This giant project that was just approved will really change the face of dt LA.

If there was ever a city for which it's downtown didn't serve as it's identity or central point or "face of a place" it's Los Angeles. Ask any person the first vision that comes to mind when they hear or read "Los Angeles" and downtown LA isn't in the top 10. Most cities yes, not LA.

Beaches
Hollywood
Weather
Freeways
Sprawl
Smog
Beverly Hills
