I guess that's what they call "white flight"

Thanks for all the good advice...I've just done some exploring since I've come to L.A.; it hasn't been too hard to realize which neighborhoods I should stay out of. Malibu, Agoura Hills, and Calabasas aren't diverse lol but I haven't had any problems.

Oh, be careful when venturing in East LA. They're not well welcoming of blacks.

Years ago Baldwin Hills used to be for the elite wealthy black population, according to my husband, but doesn't know where that stands today. He also mentioned that when Pepperdine U was in dwntwn LA nobody...nobody went there but since building a beautiful campus up in Malibu overlooking the ocean...a whole different story.

Don't take this the wrong way but I think very few people, regardless of race, who is going to grad school at Pepperdine would want to live in any LA county neighborhood that has experienced significant amounts of "black flight" over the last 20 years. From my understanding most of the African American flight is at the lower end of the socioeconomic scale. And most of those neighborhoods have gone from "ghettos" to "barrios."

I think your first priority is to consider the commute time. If you're from the Bay Area, SoCal traffic can be a real bear to deal with. I'd first list a number of communities that are within a tolerable distance of the campus so that you don't spend an extrodinate amount of time on the road. Then you can then prioritize in terms of cost, amenities, ethnic composition, etc.
