Does anyone here avoid driving on SM blvd because it gets really sketchy like around Virgil, Western, Highland etc around the 101 and take Sunset instead even though Sunset may be slower?

This can't be serious.

Um, SM blvd close to the 101 is super ghetto; it's a lower income neighborhood with liquor stores everywhere. If you look at the crime data reports on the Latimes homicide maps you will see tons of people got killed there within the last few years. Santa Monica and Western or Virgil etc. That area is super ghetto and people have gotten shot there.

True, but how many of those people are strangers yanked out of their car at a stop light? I'm guessing to say that a lot of these murders were drug/gang/argument/whatever related.

For the record, I do get a little tense when I go thru super sketchy areas myself

No, have never avoided driving on SM in that area, though there are a couple of blocks I would not walk down at 2 a.m.

True but better to decrease your chances of getting caught in the crossfire "just in case". I feel safer driving down Sunset for some reason, it looks nicer. SM is just sketchy as heck; I get skeeved out driving there.

Jackie, I remember reading some of your posts before. It seems like the safety of the areas in which you drive is vitally important to you. Therefore, I can see how navigating in So Cal could make you a nervous wreck. By all means, if driving down certain streets scares you, steer clear (literally!). But if you have the idea that drivers in these areas are being accosted and dragged from their cars at every corner while waiting for a red light, you are mistaken.

It's called diversity now.
Don't muck up the fantasy!

Nice job of dismissing the OPs concerns.
Tell us honestly, do you lock your car doors in these areas?
The choice is between being racist or foolish.
Safe or sorry.
