I am a 24 year old Beauty Therapist who is considering moving out to LA from England sometime in the near future. Is this really a good idea??

Has anybody any idea of how much I could earn from working within the Beauty Industry in LA and what my outgoings would be if I were to move there.

Depends on what line of the beauty industry you are considering. Hair, skin therapy, Nails etc. If you are dependable, you can find employment quite easily.

Have you been here? Due to the possibility of culture shock (I'm not talking about the weather, obviously), I can tell you from experience, you should visit here--more than once--to get a feel. Guaranteed your first visit out will feel like heaven, because, well...you're on vacation. And it's brand-new. Try three, four or more times. I know that seems cost-prohibitive but so is attempting to move back across the pond later...so I'm just giving you a heads-up.

After a bunch of times, you may still be totally in love with the area and decide to stay; so I'm not saying that's not a possibility. My FIL moved here from Chicago 65 years ago and never looked back. But you kind of need to be careful of so drastic a move.

I can't comment on how successful you'd be in your industry because I'm not in that industry, but just wanted to throw that in for ya.

Good luck on whatever you decide!

You're young so you've got a lot less to lose. I know many Brits who moved here and absolutely love it. They seem to congregate in Santa Monica. Have you ever been to L.A.?

Los Angeles has the largest British population of any American city. They can't be wrong. Are you fair skinned and red haired. What are 'outgoings'? Have you been to L. A. before?

I think she means expenses/cost of living.

I agree with Sorcerer68 said. When I lived in LA, I worked with a guy from Newcastle...the only people who could understand him when he spoke were the group of British friends he made who were living in Santa Monica and West LA.

I don't know a thing about the beauty industry, but if you can make friends or connections in L.A. ahead of time, that's probably the best way to go. Try to find an online British-expat community in Southern California...there must be one out there somewhere!

Good luck!

Addendum: I just looked, out of curiosity...there is one here: British Expatriate Community : British Expat Community

Actually no it isnt unless you have a close relative who is an American Citizen , no one else could or would sponsor you.
As someone who is British myself you need to come here legally and it takes a long time.

Just be careful. Yes, you would more than likely be successful, but also be wary. If you are used to a big city, you should do well, but I moved there as a 22-year old innocent country girl and, the big city was exciting for a while, but some very bad things happened to me as well.

It is very expensive to live in Los Angeles and Southern California. You will may have to find a flat mate in the beginning in order to make ends meet. My former neighborhood in Studio City is very expensive. I left there because I needed to buy a house and did not have a million dollars. Yes, you will need a million dollars to buy a house in a nice neighborhood. Please take care. Borzhie

do an online search for londoner at the beach salon in manhattan beach, and try to connect with the proprietor, anthony morrison. he moved here from england with nothing when he was about your age, and has had great success as a hair stylist, now owning a popular salon/spa in a great beach town. he recently won a hairstyling competition on tv, and i believe i heard that he is expanding his business. he seemed like a nice guy, and might have some advice for a fellow brit.

good luck.
