How does Venice serve as a living environment for a UCLA student? And which apartment complexes would you recommend. Thanks!

venice isn't exactly close to ucla, but it's not too far. i think the crowd in venice might be a bit old for college students though. venice is more of a late 20s and 30 something crowd from my experiences (I used to live nearby). if was going to ucla i'd live close to campus and save trips to the beach for the weekends.

Okay, thanks for the input! Would you be able to recommend a nice, safe area for me to live? I'm fine with anything up to 25 min or so of driving. Thanks!

BR is right as usual, although Venice is probably decently fun for a college kid. Whats wrong with Westwood like the rest of college age UCLA students?

We'll need more input on budget, apartment size, etc. to answer.

If you're a grad student look into the UCLA-owned Venice/Barry complex. It's safe & clean, and while technically in Mar Vista, it's close enough to bike ride down to the boardwalk or Abbot Kinney. If you start searching for any rooms actually in Venice the rent will be prohibitively high (unless you can afford it).

There's always Santa Monica west of the 405. I did a lot of work in Venice and it was always a pretty trippy place. You get the entire scale of 0-10s living within blocks of each other.

Actually, the student isn't me, it's my girlfriend. I'm going to be working full-time in Torrance. Here's a list of our main priorities/concerns, in order of importance:

1) safety. it'd be nice if we were near a lot of other students, too.

2) commuting time. i'll be driving around rush hours, but she most likely won't be. therefore, it'd be cool if we found a place where my travel is at most 30 to 45 min while hers is at most 15 to 20, at our respective times of day when we'll drive.

* i also have to make sure it's a place that lets us have up to 2 parking spaces

3) budget. it's not too much of an issue. we want to spend at least $1400/mo, and we have a cap of about $1800 or maybe $2000 if it's THAT great of a location, meaning that criteria 1) and 2) are satisfied nicely.

4) apartment size and convenience. we're looking for anything between 450 and 650 sq. ft, but these are not strict numbers. assuming it's a safe neighborhood as per 1), it'd be awesome if there were a lot of things conveniently within walking distance!

*** question: someone else mentioned the Venice/Barry graduate student apartments (Venice-Barry Apartments (1000318)) which i think sound awesome, but would they allow a non-student to be one of the tenants?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH to you and whoever else may choose to answer these questions. I really appreciate it as my job start date is coming up fast in July. Gotta relocate from east coast. Thanks!!!

Why did you think of Venice? Just proximity to both UCLA and Torrance? What about Culver City/Palms? I lived there for a year while I was a student at UCLA. Have you looked at prices online, in classified ads, maybe even contacted a property management company that deals with rentals in various places?

Actually Culver City / Palms was the first thing I looked at. I only recently started considering other options just to make sure there's nothing else that might seem better. What areas in Culver City / Palms should i look at? And also, what parts of them, if any, are places you think my gf and I should avoid living near? Thanks!
