Is LA recovering from the recession? Why are so many people moving back to CA? It sure seems to me like LA is.

Not sure if this is happening or not. Are these people that were L.A/CA natives and moved to texas and now moving back?

Also if people were able to move out of L.A and now can AFFORD to live in L.A when property values/rents are still pretty historically high...that must speak a lot about the economy of Texas. Maybe living in Texas allowed them to finally save up a downpayment, etc?

I just don't see a ton of jobs paying for the big difference in living costs. Even 100k jobs are a tiny percent of the population..

Who are these masses of Texans moving back to CA?...

There's nothing like California's Pacific coast!

Try as they may, but...

Austin will never be San Francisco.

Houston will never be Los Angeles.

Galveston will never be Santa Barbara.

-----

NOW...crime-wise....

Dallas is heading in the same direction as Chicago.

Think about that: Chicago without the waterfront.

Ewww.

I don't see that many texans moving back to calif judging by the license plates, an unscientific poll to be sure. When I first came to so cal back in 1991, I saw a lot more out of state plates. Not nearly as many now.

Wheres your evidence of this about texans moving back to CA? seems purely anecdotal.

I don't think LA has recovered from the recession. It's still harder here than most of the US.

Also people are supposed to get CA plates pretty soon after they move. You can't just keep the Texas plates . According to CHP it's 20 day or so that you are supposed to register the car in CA once moving/getting employement in CA.

Perhaps back in 1991 they were less strict or didn't have this rule/law..?

CHP has a program encouraging people to report these cheats because they are actually cheating us out registration fees that they legally have to pay.

Report those CHEATERS NOW!

LOL. I knew many out-of-staters who took the risk of not getting Calif license plates back then. Younger people don't have a lot of $$ to blow. Back then, there was a $300 fee just to change the out of state tag to a calif one. Then you had to pay the license tax itself which was double or triple what it was in our native states. The cost of auto insurance in my zip code (90046) was also very obscene, something to the tune of $2,000/yr. I had to use a friend's address in OC because I could not afford coverage in my zip code.

Get out of the city and go out to the suburbs (Santa Clarita, Simi Valley, Ventura, Palmdale, etc.) and you'll see a whole bunch of out-of-state plates.
