I am hoping to move to Los Angeles next year after completing a year of university here in Australia. I want to find an internship in the public relations/journalism/radio broadcast field, however not sure where yet. What areas of LA are the safest for a young student? I am hoping to have a new experience in life after living at home all my life, but I don't want to be unsafe!

What areas of LA are safe, affordable and convenient for a young person to live in their first apartment?

Please help me!!!

What's your budget and where will you plan to go to school/intern at? LA (Southern California) is a big place.

Oh man, if you're this, ahem, unaware of the area that you think you'll be living, then what makes you think you'll have ANY chance at landing an internship? And not just any internship, but one in three of the most over saturated fields one could imagine.

Look, mate, CA has an overabundance of film/journalism/communications/PR graduates from nearly all of its universities. All of those people are desperate to find anything in those fields, at a time when there are far fewer openings than a decade ago. If you don't have a job/internship lined up, then you'll be eaten alive.

I think you should actually secure an internship in LA first before researching places to live. It's kind of the putting the cart before the horse sort of thing.

The only "safe" places here in LA are going to be incredibly expensive. Honestly try somewhere like Denver or Kansas City, both of those places may have more of an opportunity for you, they'll be cheaper, and way way safer.

Some of these folks that come on this board asking for help are just a bit delusional. I don't know what they've heard about SoCal or LA in particular, but it sure as hell doesn't square with reality.....

I think the problem with finding the internship is that they first need to move here. Does that field have paying internships?

Glendale is a safe city and is near Disney and Dreamworks. Bump your expectations down many notches though.

Hahahaha, seriously. I remember this time I went to Nebraska with some friends and when the people we were hanging out with found out we were from LA, they started asking us if we knew "insert celebrity name* and if we'd ever shot people and if we were part of a gang. Idk, to the OP, your best bet is just to stay away from here. This place is going to **** and with our new mayor it's just gonna get worse. The only "cool" parts about living here is if I wanna go to Hollywood for a concert its only a 20 minute drive, Disneyland 45 mins, beach 45 mins, etc. But the daily life is a drag even for people who make good money. I work at the LADWP and I make about $86,000 a year and after rent, bills, car insurance, gas, food, etc I sometimes find myself hard pressed for money.

You work with DWP!?!? Now, that's a great gig, or so my cousins have said, they've worked for that agency for years! You guys were still public when Enron was screwing the rest of CA, that's why, according to them, people who got their utilities from DWP didn't get reamed as did everyone else.

Now, if you can't make it with that outfit, and again, from what I've heard, it's a damn good one, what chance does some kid from outta the country have? Tell yass, they've got none....

Try looking at the Legal Immigration forum here. Pretty certain visitors on visas can't work. Or are you planning an unpaid internship?
