I will be moving next month to LA from the SF Bay Area. Will be working at LAX making around 80k. Single in my late 40's looking for suggestions to live. I'm just looking for a studio apartment. Currently living on the penninsula in San Mateo area. Its pretty dull with pretty much zero nightlife and the men outnumber the women due to all the hi tech jobs here unless you go into San Francisco Not a big partier but looking for an area that has some nightlife with a good amount of single people. Don't want anymore than 20-25 minute drive. I like places that have bars , cafes and restaraunts that you can walk to. Thanks for any help.

Manhattan Beach is more low-key than Hermosa Beach for night life, and you'll probably run into more people in your age range. It's close enough to LAX. You could also check out Playa del Rey/Marina del Rey if that's more your thing. I'm a South Bay kinda girl so I'm partial to the SB beach cities.

$1200/mo is super low on your salary....your take home is around $1900 biweekly, correct?

Anyway, on that price range you are probably stuck with Westchester in an older apartment. Real close to LAX...10 minute or less drive, but not much nihhtlife. Fortunately you are close to Marina Del Rey and not more than a 30 minute drive from all the South Bay Beach areas, downtown Culver City, and Santa Monica.

You may also find something in the $1200/mo range next to Downtown Culver City if dated and small is ok.

You may also want to consider a guest house...there's a few in Mar Vista and many in Culver City.

More like $2100-2200 take home assuming a 401k contribution.

A studio apartment will save the OP $200-300 vs. a 1 bedroom. They should be able to find a studio on that budget in Palms. El Segundo, Westchester, Playa Del Ray, Venice and Mar Vista are options too but there's no guarantee you can find a place for $1200 in those areas.

Of course the beach areas, Manhattan, Redondo, etc. would be perfect but they will be out of your p;rice range I am afraid. I would suggest, like a couple others have said: Westchester. It is only a couple minutes from LAX and has what you seem want, at a price you can handle.

He's going to be making $80K and is looking for a studio, no? He can find one in Manhattan or Redondo in his price range. He didn't say he wanted to live on The Strand.

If I were you, I'd live in El Segundo. Bike to work. Bike to surf. Sweet.
