All of these areas are great/fine - not sure what pp is talking about re: Hollywood - I LOVED living in Hollywood, and this was before the regentrification that occurred a few years ago that priced me out. Most of Hollywood (except the grimier bits) will be pricey, Los Feliz, Beverly Hills, most of Studio City, quite a lot of Silverlake, Atwater, and Burbank will be too expensive (though you can find good deals in the last 3). Look into Valley Village and Valley Glen - Valley Village is nicer, but they're both just north of Studio City, and better rents. Valley Glen is also where Valley College is, which is better than LACC overall. Pierce College in Woodland Hills is also good, and Woodland Hills, though beastly hot, has some affordability, though it is farther than the main drag. Eagle Rock is lovely, though once you cross over into Highland Park, the safety factor varies literally block by block, so I'd be hesitant to rent without a very knowledgeable insider - I've been in L.A. over 12 years, and I STILL don't feel comfortable renting in HP, simply because I've been in the SFV most of that time and don't feel like I know the area well enough. You can also look into Van Nuys - quite affordable and getting nicer, just stay South of Victory.

In NY you cannot buy liquor from a major grocery store. You might be able to get beer and the crappiest cooking wines at grocery stores, drug stores, etc. Anything else, including the vast majority of wines, you must buy from the liquor stores. The liquor stores even lobby against letting grocery stores sell booze, as they fear the competition.
