I used Westside rentals three times and each time ended up finding a place that wasn't listed with them. That being said, I still would consider using them again as they have so many listings and finding a rental that meets your needs can be a challenge. Good luck!

hot pads dot com is my favorite site for rentals. They grab data from all kinds of listing services. It's a free site and I have no idea if people pay money to list with them. That being said, nothing beats driving around an area. Especially in high demand areas, you really will find the best deals with people putting signs in the window, they don't need to do much more to rent out a place.

Hot Pads is cool but West Side Rentals has 20+ times as many listings.

I have read numerous post stating that Craig's list is full of scams.
I have never read who, or how they got scammed in a Craig's list listing.
No one ever post that.
I have a number of rental properties here, and I always have good results using Craig's list for perspective tenants.
Matter of fact, I posted a new ad today for one of my rentals.
I am not out to scam anyone, and I actually don't understand a professional property management company ever thinking of such a thing, and many of we property management companies use Craig's list for our rentals.
Just who is it that is doing the scamming on Craig's list?
Bob.

I have seen obvious scam listings on Craigslist. Way underpriced places in desirable areas with questionable pictures (like a bunch of high rise buildings visible outside the window that don't match the area.) I don't know how they scam people but I assume they insist that you pay some sort of fee before they'll show it to you. You probably don't need too many suckers to bite in order to make a decent amount of money (especially if you live in Nigeria )

My main issue with Craigslist is the signal to noise ratio. It's easy to miss places if you don't look at the site multiple times per day. You don't really get that with West Side Rentals. Especially if you save your searches and sort by the newest listings.

I too see lots of scam listings, but they are so obvious only a fool (or someone really unfamiliar with LA) would get tricked. $500 for a 2BR in Santa Monica, $500 for a loft in Historic Core.

As far as WSR, I had a good experience w/ the site and found my place (which was exclusively listed on WSR as far as I could tell) with it. Hotpads is great too. Walkscore is actually decent too.

I found my apartment through Craigs List. I was looking at all of the listings for this area, not only the ones that had photos. You just need to be careful of words like "cozy" (tiny) or "_____-adjacent" ("Studio City adjacent" probably means North Hollywood!). That's probably true for all ads, though, even ones you pay to see.

If you used craigslist, did you have to pay for your credit report to be pulled by the landlord?

Silver Lake adjacent is by far the most abused. Places in Westlake, the Valley, Glendale all claiming to be a close distance from Silver Lake. Maybe at 3 in the morning with no traffic it is a 5 minute drive.
