I just thought it was interesting (granted the screenwriter, Ted Griffin, is a Pasadena native and has his biases). When I heard it suddenly I had a new perspective on that town, which is not an L.A. I was familiar with:

From the movie Rumor Has It... (kind of a sequel to The Graduate):
"There's an old saying: 'Nobody comes from Los Angeles. Everybody comes to Los Angeles.' But if you do come from Los Angeles, then chances are you come from Pasadena."
Hey, I realize now where the parents in The Graduate were supposed to have lived, in Pasadena. And I certainly wouldn't call today's Pasadena conservative. I'd just say the demographic skews much younger nowadays. No more "little old lady from..." image.

My mom taught Ted Griffin for middle school English, guess she didn't turn him off from writing!

I read all the comments, and have to say I was entertained. I too began with the premise that Pasadena is more liberal, but I can see how there surely would be some pockets of conservative people as well.

The A+ Logic comment had me giggling. I was going to say that I consider myself an environmentalist and Vegan, and was going to use that logic to say that if people were more liberal they would be more likely to be environmentalists and Vegans, but I saw the fault in that logic and didn't choose to add that (until now). I think there is some truth to that.

For example, if you see a bunch of overweight, white people in a rural area, I have a feeling one could make some pretty quick assumptions. I just preferred to ask if Pasadena was liberal or conservative and leave it at that, but I do appreciate the entertainment.

I was born and raised in Montrose when it was lily-white, almost hyper-conservative, got my AA degree from PCC, lived in Pasadena for awhile, and have worked at a very large company on the edge of Pasadena for the past 36 years.

To me, Pasadena is neither liberal nor conservative. I would call it just slightly left of center. There are more people registered with the Democrat party than the Republican party. Politically, there is a very good balance, and the city works. (The elected political leaders could be compared to Southern Democrats. Democrat for sure, but with strong conservative leanings.)

Was saying it was conservative than Los Angeles and other cities in the county such as Compton or West Hollywood. Pasadena really isn't like L.A. and other county cities.

I don't think any liberal places is as well kept than the top places that are conservative. At least the places that I have been to.

No, it's not like Compton or West Hollywood, however, there are 88 incorporated municipalities in LA county and it is relatively similar to places such as Burbank, Sierra Madre, Arcadia, La Canada and to a lesser extent Santa Monica. It's probably more liberal than most of the area around it because it has younger population.

You realize that Palo Alto is extremely liberal or that Bakersfield is extremely conservative right?

I'm not sure I've been to Palo Alto or even Bakersfield.

You would say that many maybe even most places that are conservative are pretty strict.

Strict with regards to what? Parking violations, nuisance ordinances, zoning restrictions? Whether an individual is strict or not, rarely has much to do with the cleanliness of a city.

Just curious, how old are you? If you don't want to answer, that's fine.

No, I don't. I'm just hoping that the reason why your responses are pretty uninformed and you haven't been out of the county much is because you're young, which is understandable. If not, that's unfortunate.

Do you care to expound on such a vague statement? i.e. describe how Pasadena's land use requirements or parking code make it "cleaner" than say Compton.
