I'm about to transfer to UCLA so i've been currently looking for a place in the LA area and eventually I came across this condo that I really liked. Its a 1br on 5th st/washington ave in Santa Monica.
Im very stoked about this place cause its like 5 blocks from the beach (!!) and within walking distance to the 3rd st promenade, Santa Monica place, the pier and so on...
Since i'm an outdoor person and a beach lover this sounds like the perfect location to me, if it was not for the main issue that has been scaring me a little bit so I decided to ask you guys about it: are homeless people a major concern in that area?

Ive visited SM a bunch of times so im aware of the large number of bums that gather around the pier though they posed no threat to me or anyone else passing by at the times I was there. however living somewhere is a totally different experience than visiting it so should I worry about that issue when living in SM?
Id really love living close to the beach and the possibility of being a few steps away from everything that goes on in downtown SM and thats why Im really considering renting this condo on 5th st but im not that used to urban living and the cons that come with it (ie dealing with homeless people on a daily basis) and a friend of mine that says he knows people that used to live in SM has been doing a pretty good job at scaring me by telling me stories of how those friends of his were constantly harassed by bums while they lived in Santa Monica.

Can anyone give me an input on what would it be like to live in SM for a college student who's just moved to LA? is SM a safe place to live for the most part?

homeless will ask for money around the promenade and sleep in palisades park. harassment was not common when i lived in santa monica a few years back, nor when i visit now. 5th/Washington is a very nice part of SM, if you can afford it i would do it. the only thing i will mention is that beach access is not exactly easy from that area and requires a walk down a decent amount of stairs to get to the sand.

Santa Monica would be an awesome experience for you. You should consider yourself very fortunate to be able to afford to live in such a place at your age. Do it!

There are homeless in the tourist areas but they are rarely dangerous. Just flip them a quarter, or ignore them.

As a young college student, Santa Monica would seem to me to be an awesome place to be.

Ditto the GET A BIKE

Learn the bus routes too and keep lots of change as not all routes use the same transfers.

HAVE FUN and thank your lucky stars that you can afford Santa Monica as a student.

If you can afford it, do it. Nearly everyone wants to live in santa monica. Well not me personally, but its an extremely desirable area.

Five years from now when you graduate, you'll be posting in the real estate forum, "I want to buy in Santa Monica but I have $60,000 in student loans and no down payment"
How does anyone afford to buy here?"

How about buying now, you are going to be here for the next 5 years?
