Look into visiting "Din Tai Fung Dumpling House" which has 3 LA locations to pick from. They're an international chain but are authentic and will get you bragging rights even in several Asian country.
Guys, I am having GREAT time at LA! Following all your recommendations, although it will be impossible to see it all, or even a big part of it. I do what I can, time permitted.
Today looks like rain so I am staying in town, and hopefully tomorrow will be a better day to visit Venice.
So, DTLA walking tour for today, maybe Japanese town and Chinatown.
Question for you, OP: I went to Din Tai Fung and it was amazing! Probably one in life occasion to visit it, because there are only very few locations in the US.
Which is creating my next question: Is there another famous restaurant in LA that is world known but has only one or just few locations across US? Of course I would hate to miss the opportunity to visit it!
Looking for to see any suggestions.
Thank you all very much for making my stay here such a wonderful experience!

I went to Phillipes. Great food. But I wonder if there is another unique place like Din Tai Fung

If you want to try something unique, you might try Mashti Malone's Mashti Malone

They serve Middle Eastern ice cream.

I am back...
Happy to get to see your beautiful, interesting city, and sad that my trip ended and left me with feeling that there is still so much to enjoy, and learn, and taste, so many places to go, people to meet. Yes, people were very helpful, friendly, smiling and greeting... I had such a great time!!
I worked more than I initially anticipated, but I tried to use my free time to the max, and follow your recommendations.
I saw LA downtown, the modern Business District, and the old historical part. I went to Chinatown and Little Tokyo. I briefly visited Korea Town. I went to see Hollywood, and Venice.
Enjoyed food at Dim Tai Fung (also watched how the dumplings were prepared - what an experience!!), ate Asian, Jewish, Russian, Polish food. Had sandwich at Phillipe's, brunch at Pantry, dinner at Craft. Going to post some reviews on Yelp and Urbanspoon.
Visited Getty's Museum, Griffith Observatory, saw Walt Disney Concert Hall (how futuristic!), Central Library, Hollywood Hills and the Sign (I encounter a wolf there), walked through Oliver Street, El Pueblo, LA Art District (so many great murals!), Union Station (the ceiling, mosaics and lamps!), The City Hall, Venice Canals (very surprising), the beach and Venice Broadwalk, observed airplanes at LA Airport, experienced stunning Christmas display at The Americana at Brand in Glendale, saw some churches (unfortunately all were closed, so I didn't had a chance to see the interiors), the Wilshire Boulevard Temple was closed too, Japanese temples (although they were closed, I had a chance to have a tour and saw the interiors).
I was driving on Sunset Blvd, Rodeo Dr, Pacific Ave (daytime and at night), Highland Ave (from El Segundo to Rogers Beach), saw some great sculptures, public art and parks... Way too many things to list!

It was a great trip, the weather was good (I barely escaped a big rain in Venice), the traffic was bearable (however I was surprised that there was way less bullying and tailgating, than in Houston). I also noticed that I didn't had to see police in my face all the times, like back home. Everywhere was safe to walk without seeing them on every corner, also less security staff in the stores watching your every move.
Homeless people everywhere, but no incidents, and they were not bothering anyone. Many were young people trying to survive in hope that someone important will notice them, and maybe give a few lines in a play.
Generally people appeared to be fitter - walking, biking, hiking a lot. To be fair: the great, much cooler weather promotes such activities, and there are many places that are designed for it.
I also noticed that almost every, no matter how little, free space was converted to an eye-candy park, or square with public art, plants, grass, tables or just benches to sit and relax. LA was very clean, Venice not so.
The city has absolutely fantastic public transportation network, including subways, light-rail, buses and shuttles to just about every corner of the Greater Los Angeles area. However finding a car parking spot was sometimes difficult, and extremely expensive.

I took over 1000 pix. and will post few on your LA picture thread to share some of my visual and culinary experiences.

Thank you all again for the suggestions, and tips (I printed out the entire thread) - they were really very helpful!!

Glad you had a great time and that LA treated you well. You did a lot in a week and yes, there's much more to see. Looking forward to your pics. You have a lot of competition in that thread. Some of the pics in there are jaw dropping.

I know you are home now and this is too late, but for others; certainly The Pantry is a must as is Phillipe's French dips. Both are Los Angeles, downtown landmarks and along with the Grand Central Market should never be missed.

Glad you had a nice trip. I live close to the Americana at Brand and I haven't seen the Christmas display this year but they do do it up big every year. Do they have anything like the Americana in Houston?
