I was bouncing back and forth between LA and the Bay Area. I had just been in the LBC for a stint not long before that. Then back up here. And I was back in LA, in Lakewood, about a month after. I missed it by weeks.

I was back in my home state, sucking my thumb, throwing tantrums like only a toddler could, and requesting milk from "the tall one".

I had recently been born. My mom got postpartum depression with me because of the riots. She said she remembered seeing fires everywhere, people stealing and looting from stores and she was afraid we would all starve.

I was at home in the relative safety of Glendale, watching it on TV.

I was in elementary school in the Midwest, pretty much oblivious. I guess it was a big story nationally, but my family never really watched the news and a 4th grade classroom probably wasn't the place for discussions on riots, race relations and police brutality.

I was in the South Bay at a business meeting when the whole thing broke out. I recall people running to the gas station to stock up water, whatever food they could buy, filling up and leaving. The fires could be seen from the 405.

I was at Berkeley High that day. The hallways were very tense, and the riots were all anyone was talking about...by afternoon most everyone had left class, and were out in the streets protesting and eventually rioting on Telegraph Ave. And by late afternoon/early evening it had spread to cities all across the country.
That must've been what it was like to be in any American city back when MLK was shot dead in 1968.

I was living in Long Beach and was selling my van that day...I drove across town to Glendale to deliver the vehicle...it was quite a site seeing all the smoke and fires.
