Is there still a lot of blacks in LA? (Los Angeles: condos, how much)

Are blacks disappearing in places like Compton/Los Angeles? I heard they been leaving.

The Black population is on a tremendous decline (10-15 years ago, South LA was 60% Black, now its 60% Hispanic), and doesn't appear to be bottoming out anytime soon.

Blacks continue to have low birth rates and flee to faraway suburbs (Moreno Valley, Rialto, Lancaster, etc) and Southern states such as Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, but also Arizona and Nevada. The aforementioned, coupled with Hispanic immigration (..and the exorbitant birth-rates by those immigrants) means that the death knell for Black neighborhoods as we have traditionally known them, has been sounded.

Black-majority areas are increasingly becoming a rarity in our city, as even the most hardcore of former Black hoods (except The Greater Black Beverly Hills nexus; Ladera Heights, Baldwin Hills/Vista, View Park, Windsor Hills, etc, which will stay Black) become awash with Mexicans, or are in the process of. I don't even know how much longer Blacks can hang on to Crenshaw, Jefferson Park, West Adams and the few Mid-City/South LA locales that are still majority Black, all of which were, until recently, firmly entrenched bastions of Black Americana.

In short: Its already happened, to a certain degree anyways.

Whites came from the burbs during the urban renaissance, settling in many urban locales, effectively "trading" spaces with Blacks and Hispanics, who left those very urban locales in favor of suburbs/exurbs.

Downtown LA, Echo Park, Silverlake, Mount Washington, Eagle Rock, Hollywood and even Koreatown (though its a bit tricky because lots of $$$ Koreans built - and occupied those luxury condos) were all good examples of this. The process was even in its infancy in such places like Westlake, Pico-Union, Highland Park, West Adams/Jefferson Park (upper middle class Blacks moving in here, though), parts of Boyle Heights, etc etc. In "return", Blacks moved in sizable numbers to Lancaster, Palmdale, Fontana, San Bernandino, Victorville and Rialto. Hell, Altadena is 31.4% Black! Hispanics flocked to many of those suburbs as well, though they were often in many cases joined by immigrants straight from Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, etc.

So yes, in essence, it has already happened.

Latinos are stabilizing Compton\ South LA by purchasing homes & improving the property. Large families w/ a fairly significant male figure\ father in the home\ heavily catholic. But poverty is still high in these areas [esp now].

Afro-Americans make up 10% of the population in LA county [probably a little higher in LA proper]. Hispanics account for over 40% [the largest ethnic group in Los Angeles since they were the first residents over 200 yrs ago].

I guess if blacks have relocated anywhere in LA city, it's obviously the Westside. It's increasing slowing while the black population in South LA is decreasing fast. Or they're moving to other cities in California or out of state.

And while Hispanics are indeed purchasing property, improving the property? Well, lets just say that generally isn't the case (granted, the neighborhoods aren't in much better shape when owned by Blacks, but I've seen in ALOT in South Gate, Watts, Compton, South LA, Oakland, etc) -- We're talking overgrown grass, shopping carts and cars on the lawn, the residents sometimes even tag up their own places, rusted old children toys in the front, ugly iron gates and stucko-add on's, etc. I've also seen many coyotes snap up homes (particularly ones with garages) to shelter illegal immigrants. Hopefully what I've seen, extensive as it is, is done by a minority of homeowners. That said, I applaud the Hispanics for having a sharing my love for owning property



And I think the Black population is somewhere around 6-7%, per 2008 estimates.

The percentage of blacks in LA has remained close to constant(about 10 to 12%) for decades. It's just that now blacks are living in areas that they never would have lived in 30 years ago.

C'mon happ, what are you implying? Most of these places had intact family structures, hope, confidence and desire for a life better than the one of present, and a steadfast pride and relishing for their neighborhood/country wayyyy before the Hispanics moved in (not denying that Hispanics have those qualities as well)
